My wife is seriously into genealogy and has hit a roadblock. She's run into some Canadian branches of her lineage and has no idea of the resources available in Canada to contact for researching the information she needs. Can anyone offer guidance? |

This site is good for French Canada but as you might expect it's in french.
And this site does have lots of links and it's bilingual.
Hope this help. |

Hi - if it's French Acadian (Canadian) genealogy she's interested in I can also provide some links for that. Université Sainte-Anne has done a lot of work in that area and may have info on their web site. Good luck! |

If you could be a tad more specific as to which part of Canada she intends to conduct her research in, I could ask a friend of mine who is really into this stuff.

I to am into Genealogy have you cked out "The Source"...you should be able to find a current edition at your local library...they have in the back of the book LOTS of references and places to connect to internationally...if you need more information on the author of the book let me know....I have been able to trace back a solid line to 1650's here in the US (Virginia)...this is my husbands linage....kind of cool... |

oh, and there is Ancestry.com...they are really good..we (Rick) even did a DNA Genealogy test that was what proved his linage to the person in 1650. Which we had suspected that he connected with...but now we have proof.. |

Ray, she is searching all of Cananda for a specific family name. One specific area she gave me was Newfoundland. |

Steve, did you find any good resources for your wifes genealogy research? my best source book is "The Source" A Guide to American Genealogy - edited by Loretto Dennis Szucs & Sandra Hargreaves Luebking. It is not a cheap book by any long shot and I know it says American genealogy...but this book has helped me to think and find just about all the resources that are out there and where to research next. Looking at paperwork etc. Many regions have Genealogy Societies usually in the "county seat" areas (that is an American term). My library is a wonderful source of where to look next. My grandparents came from Russia entered in Montreal, crossed over at Port Huron and their final destination was Max, ND (God's belly button!!). With the help of the people in Montreal, we have found out since that my grandparents would have purchased their ticket in Belgium that would take them all the way to Max. And they sent us some examples of what they would have received when they purchased their tickets. One other excellent source is the Mormon Church...at a local church (by you) they have access to amazing information, and will share anything that they have. They will help you research and point you in the correct directions. Hope this helps....

You might try the NEHGS in addition to Ancestry.com. The NEHGS has a surprising amount of international original sources collected from their Great Migration project.
Another way to go would be Google's Book Search which has an amazing amount of Genealogy magazines and published histories from libraries across the world.
Good luck! |
