Sigh.. my 30 gig Zune is out of commission. Along with all the other Zune 30's that use Microsoft's most recent Zune firmware!

I guess it's time to switch / upgrade to an I-pod!

Yeah, my son in law has a 1st gen Zune. I e-mailed him when I saw the article on ARS Technica, and he says his also bricked today. My Sansa Clip works fine, though.

We have two of them :) $200 worth of junk now!

Anyone know what Microsoft plans on doing about this, if anything?

Looks like we all should get a refund or credit

Both of mine are frozen, too.

Here's an article about it.

It may be a world-wide glitch involving a million Zunes. :-(

At least I have my iPhone with an iPod. :-)

I just got a Zune 8g for Christmas. So far it's fine - but I haven't run it since Monday. Might need to check it out tonight. Is it only a problem with the 30g?

ETA - I read article, answered own question. Something to be said for smaller and simple, maybe?

Dang, thats freaky, i was reading about this, and figured I'd turn mine on to prove it wrong, and sure enough it froze on the start up screen like it was described. What the heck this is weird.

eta: mine is the 30gb 1st gen

No, not at all. The Zune 80GB and 120GB units are fine.

According to Penny Arcade, it might be a Leap Year bug.

Ok, try this. My was stuck on the zune screen so I started playing around. Press the center button and the right >> button at the same time for 5 seconds. I did that and now have access to all my music, videos, and pictures. I turned it off and back on and it does not freeze.

Ok this may not be the fix. I have not done the firmware upgrade to my zune but my son has. What I stated above worked for me but NOT for his. So it has something to do with the new firmware.

My Zune has
Version 2.5 (1614)
Bootloader 435

Here is the fix.

"Microsoft said Wednesday that a leap year issue caused problems with the 30-gigabyte Zunes, following a flood of online customer complaints about the digital music players freezing up.

The company issued a statement pinpointing 'a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year.'

Microsoft also said that 'the issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to Jan. 1, 2009.'

The internal clocks on the Zune 30 should reset at noon GMT on Thursday, the company said."

I also read that folks might have to let the batteries run down completely in order for the Jan 1 date switch to actually solve the problem.......

That shouldn't be a problem since you can't turn it off. Just disconnect from power source and it'll be all drained. We have two here and I was looking forward to using it for the party tonight. Oh well.
