I have two D300 bodies. Last night while shooting a gymnastics meet, one of the bodies would not fire at the 8fps that it was set at(its only shooting 2 frames at a time). I changed the battery (I have the super high powered one), I changed lenses, and memory cards. I also compared settings to the other camera......Help, the body is just over one year old. Any ideas?

I know you said you checked the settings but just to be sure...

Did you check "d5 Max. continuous release" under Shooting/Display?

Have you tried changing the quality, try BASIC and see if you get more frames.

I think those are the only two obvious things to check at the moment since you have already exchanged cards, batteries, and lenses.

Are you using the grip, fast enough memory card?

I think you can only shoot the 8fps if you have the battery grip (with both batteries) on it.

You need to pack it in a box and ship it to me, it is haunted and will taint the other body if you don't separate them soon. I will sacrifice myself for the cause and keep it safe and warm while protecting your other body. ;P

Yes, I am using the grip and the battery required for the 8 FPS. I have only recently started experiencing this issue. I have never had an issue before this weekend.

Please set your image quality to BASIC and see if the problem persists, changes, or resolves.

Also did you check the "d5 Max. continuous release" setting under Shooting/Display?

Yes, It is set at 7 fps in the menu. I will go try the basic setting now.

Set to basic gives me the same issue.

It would be the setting just under that, max continuous release, it sets how many shots to take in one burst, above that is at what speed to take the shots. The max continuous release should be set to... 100 normally which is the max burst supported on the D300.

Ok, well that is good to hear. That makes it less likely to be a hardware issue.

So, your other body was doing fine under the same conditions, at the same time? It wasn't a matter of too slow of shutter speeds in those conditions/lighting?

Other body is doing just fine.

Is it possibly set to 14-bit images rather than 12? At 14-bit I believe it shoots at ~2.5 frames per second with the grip attached or not.

That is troubling. Does it still do it with any VR and AF turned off? Set the body itself to manual "M" (rotating switch on front, left side bottom of lens mount), turn off any VR...

Actually one better, take your lens off and put your body cap on (the cheap little plastic plug that came with it, or if you lost it holding a lens cap on the front is fine), so it is protected from dust entry.

Then try, still only shooting 2 frames?

Rather than playing a guessing game with the settings, I'd just reset it to factory default (if you haven't already). If it's still being wonky I'd say you probably have a hardware problem.

You've already swapped and eliminated the card and lens. You said you changed the battery, but did you swap the whole grip or just the batteries?

If it's not your settings, and it's not your added hardware, then it's Nikon's problem.

I would tend to agree but the D300 is good for going wonky with just one switch flipped the wrong way, I know this personally. So I wanted to eliminate anything that could be done personally before suggesting she give up her camera for a number of weeks. :) D300's are awfully hard to set down, let alone ship away.

Good thing she has two! Compare switchy-doo-dads with the working camera to make togtog feel better, and then send it back to Nikon.

=)

Hi everyone...Thanks for the help.
I tried setting it to factory setting...Same issue.
I tried swapping battery grips with the other camera...same issue
The setting is at 12 bit...same issue

When I get home I will try turning off the vr, and the body cap thing to see if that helps.

I am super ticked about this, I am two weeks out of the one year warranty!!!!! All I want for Christmas is for my camera to work properly!

Actually just to be clear and eliminate reduntant steps, you don't need to mess with VR at the moment. Just set the focus-select (front rotating switch) to "M" and remove any and all lenses and adapters from the front and try shooting and see if the problem persists.

The lens cap step is just to keep dust from getting sucked in but in any case unless you are outside in sandstorm it probably won't matter. :)

I wish you the best of luck and I was worried about the warranty, I know mine is coming up in a couple months.

Make sure you have bracketing is turned off.
