I am going to preface this with I'm boiling mad at the moment. So read this with that in mind.

I placed an order with my normal book store online. The order was for a member of DPC from this thread. I placed the order in plenty of time to get to me and then I could send it off to allow the member to get it in time. According to my order it was suppose to arrive in 3-8 business days from the time of my order, plenty of time right.

Well apparently Fedex and USPS have teamed up to form Fedex smart post............or the new DHL as I currently call it. The way it works is, fedex picks it up and then hands it off to the USPS in the closest USPS sortation office to the city to be delivered. Sounds great right........well it would be if it actually worked and someone knew what they were doing. The members gift has been 40 miles from me according to Fedex for the past 5 days in the hands of the post office. According to the post office they received it just three days ago and its going to take 2-9 days for me to get it. So after 5 calls and a trip to the post office this morning I'm on my way to the city to pick up the book locally so I can mail it to arrive in time.

Anyway when you place orders these days be careful if they are using the new Fedex Smart Post system. Its poor to say the least. The post office and Fedex have been placing the blame on each other all morning and for a while neither would even admit they actually had it.

I used it few time because it was the free shipping deal. Well it was slow just to get out the door which wasn't any fault of DHL. From the time I placed the order to delivery was about 5 days. Orders that were shipped UPS ground I got the next day, and both of these were from NJ to NY (same store).

Wow! Thanks for the heads-up. FedEx is not my favorite shipper. Actually, none of them are anymore. But FedEx seems to really take the cake.

A while back we shipped a package from San Franciso, CA to SAcramento, CA. Sent it FedEx ground. That package went halfway across the country, as opposed to making the 85 mile journey between to large metropolitan centers, in a direct fashion. (It went clear to Kentucky, and then took a roundabout trip back to California. According to the employee I talked to, they cannot let a given class of package sit for over a given amount of time, yet if they send it straight to the destination then it would get there too quickly and there would be no reason for people shipping between those points to use the faster (higher priced) services.

Conversely, I shipped a package from Chicago to Poplar Bluff, MO last week, UPS ground, and it arrived the next day. No roundabout, no delay, no sitting. To be fair I have had issues with UPS a time or two also. But not like FedEx. Or the dreaded DHL.

Disclaimer... I'm not affiliated with any of the above delivery services. I make electricity for a living, and we offer same day delivery.

ETA Disclaimer...

I normally use USPS Priority Mail to ship things and have things shipped to me and have found it to be very good. Price is reasonable and it gets there within a few days.

Not sure about this new FedEx / USPS combo. My guess would be that it does not go Priority Mail.

No it doesnt, in fact I'm not sure why they would even team up to do this. Here is how it has worked on my order.

I live in MO, I placed my order and it shipped the next day from a location in IL, you know that state right next to me. It went to Indiana, you know the one two states away, then went from Indiana to earth city MO(essentially St. Louis) the same day. It has been there or in transit to me(they can not really decide where it is currently) since then. BTW thats about 40 miles from me. And according to my order it went standard delivery 3-8 days. However once it was received in St. Louis it was automatically downgraded to parcel post and now takes 2-9 days to get the last 40 miles of its trip.

At any rate I drove to St. Louis and bought another one so I can mail it priority mail tomorrow to hopefully arrive before Christmas for Jutilda

I have not had good luck with Fedex ever. USPS is only for stuff you want to ship slowly at low cost. A combination of the two seems like the worst possible convergence of weaknesses to me--thanks for the warning...

I pay the premium for Amazon Prime--and then 2nd UPS delivery is free, while next day is 3.99. This pays for itself really fast--one Christmas when I didn't use it for 6 gifts that I packed myself and shipped via UPS, I spent $80 to get those puppies shipped. Amazon Prime ROCKS.

Me too! Prime members also get free overnight starting December 21st, I think, but just for Christmas. :)

Just for the record I am not sticking up for Fed Ex or any of the others. But I must say, We have not had any problems with any of them this year apart from UPS always leaving packages on our front step in a puddle of water. So far this year everything we have ordered has shown up just 2 or 3 days after purchase, It actually surprised us that some of it came so quickly without selecting the 2 day or 1 day delivery option. We have had Fed Ex and UPS here just about every day for the past week. This time of year is crazy for those companies. They have so many trucks coming and going with millions of packages flying through their hands, They will screw up with some of them. I know it sucks when it happens, but I understand why it happens. It still makes me mad. But that is the chance we take when we have something shipped.

Actually I think DHL are a pretty good company - I had a email from my wedding album suppliers on Monday night (their Tuesday morning) to say that an album has been despatched and I signed for it this morning (Thursday).. You have to admit that is pretty impressive.. all via DHL

(oh, Album manufacturers are in New Zealand, I am in UK)

The difference is where you are located. DHL isnt nearly as effective here in the US, and is pretty much the laughing stock of the shipping community here. In fact recently they have almost shut down operations here in the US.
