I say a 4 (+/- .5) for me.

I may in trouble with this one having just read all these postings!

When I looked up bokeh there was an article that showed how to create the effect by cutting a small hole in a piece of paper and sticking on the front of a lens. I've followed that - OOPS!

I see my score going out of focus in a very unpleasant way very early.

Haha--some of us are going for a personal best in low score. Me included.

So for the sake of discussion (I love this image Roz and it would have been top ten in the BoKeh challenge) this image is perfect.

It has all the best and worst of bokeh. The background is creamy smooth to isolate the subject and the colors so complementary to the subject, it has the little Circles of light (but not required for good BoKeh) that add sparkle and overall make this a great image.

The problem with this image is the little points of light are octagons and make this Harsh BoKeh and not so pleasing to the eye.

Again BoKeh is a concept about what is pleasing to the eye and there for subjective. There is technique involved in BoKeh but the technique is not what defines BoKeh.

Thanks for your indulgence.

I'm not hopeful for this particular challenge either, I think I'll be lucky if my entry gets above 4!

thank you to all those who gave me some advice and the nice gentleman who sent me a message too. I don't think it is a winner by any means lol but at least I was able to submit something that might at least be a poor attempt at it and you all taught me a lot which is why I go through this frustration every week!

Well, I just got my 50mm 1.4 which would have been perfect for this challenge--but it just arrived today, so no time to go shoot with it.

So I entered another image that I like, but it kinda pushes the Bokeh definition to the edge of the envelope. I expect to get slammed, but I'll still have fun hitting that [Update] every few seconds for a week!

I wish I had seen this thread before now. When I looked up examples of bokeh, the "circles of light" photos predominated, even if accompanied by other more subtle examples, or by explanations that bokeh is not about circles of light. Yet I gather from this thread (and the Bokeh V scores thread) that there is a backlash against the whole circles of light idea. If bokeh is not about a pleasing pattern or quality in the OOF areas of a photo, why not just call it shallow DOF and be done with it?

If you've learned something new, then that's reason enough for it to be a Bokeh challenge instead of a Shallow DOF challenge.

Basically I've learned that the definition of bokeh is subjective, and that you can't please everyone (but I already knew that). ;-)

Shallow DOF is a very different concept, you could have a wide DOF with an OOF background that displays all the character of a great bokeh shot. The concept is about the way the background interacts with the foreground to enhance the shot or add drama, as stated it is subjective but REALLY GOOD bokeh is clear to many when they see it.
