I haven't decided whether or not to call. I don't think it will be necessary, as I'll know when he starts talking about Western Union, or sending a cheque to me for 300 Euro and I can pay him back the balance, or bank account numbers, or whatever other scams there are. I'll know when the scam happens, and then it will be time to pull a taterbug on his ass! |
They might appreciate knowing this is happening, if it's a scam. They'd certainly appreciate knowing it LOOKS like a scam, if it's legit..

Right, of course. I didn't consider both sides, thanks for the insight, Bear. I'm pretty busy tomorrow, but I'll try to look into it ASAP.

Also, just to throw it out there, I know of a reputable independent record label here in the US with lots of credibility (that I have personally dealt with) and exposure that deals through a Gmail account. |

I could be wrong, but it sounds like bull shit to me.
I mean...avoiding spam by giving out a secondary email? Does anyone do that? Sounds more like they made a gmail account that has the name of the company so it sounds legit.
Also...how often do you find a company telling you up front what they'll pay you for your piece. Isn't the first rule of negotiating, that the person who goes first generally loses?
I would be cautious...
They probably have paypal, so, see if they pay :) |

Good news... this appears to be for real so far. I've pasted his email below and removed some info and replace with "#", to protect the innocent.
Now I have concerns of another kind:
1. Do I send an invoice and await payment before sending file? How are they to trust that I'm actually the photographer unless I send the full sized file first. The one they found on the Web is sized down.
2. They want the unedited, RAW file, which I still have in archive, but my shot is all about the post processing. I don't know if I want to even give the RAW file away, anyhow. But the point is, it would be useless to them because they don't have my elite editing skills.
3. Also, do I give my GST number (Canada) in place of a VAT number?
==============
Dear John
Thanks for your reply on my image request.
Please find your image in its most original state, so without the corrections you made. If you have it in RAW, that is perfect.
Please send it by using //www.send2deliver.com
Send it to my emailaddress: #########@mercurius.com
Payment.
We need an invoice, so make one in Word or any texteditor.
To pay you we need your full bankaccount details, WITH the international moneytransfer numbers like IBAN or BIC. Ask your bank.
Or if you have PayPal, we need the emailaddress linked to PayPal.
If you are so professional that you have a VAT number we need that one too.
Awaiting your reply
met vriendelijke groet,

Just my opinion (so take it for what it's worth), you send both the file and the invoice together. This isn't a COD exchange and they are a reputable company afaik. They also publish images as a course of business and must have editors on hand. They probably saw something they liked in your image, but not necessarily your editing. LOL! If it would make you happy, send both the raw file and an high rez edited version. |

Send the highest resolution lowest compression jpeg and tell that you dont have the RAW. You sell it like it is, I guess they would like the Raw so they can crop different if there is more space.
This company is officially registered on the address you have there. I checked it at the company registration office.
I live very close to them, I can be your agent for 40% of your turnover from deals like this. :)))
They want the number that you use as a business to register your tax on turnover on. Not your personal income tax number.

I can see it now. They're going to be so impressed by my elite editing skills they're going to fly me to the Netherlands to give a course! ;-)

My GST number is for my business (I put it on my CAnadian invoices). I also have a Business number. But it's all Canadian stuff. I don't know what a VAT number is, other than it stands for Value Added TAx.

An earlier commenter asked if you'd spoken to them on the phone - best advice possible as the rest does sound like a scam. Or, ask for a cheque rather than hand over your bank details to a faceless email address. |

I'd just go with the paypal option to make things easier all around. |

That GST number is what they would like to have.
(I did some research again, that's 5% extra for me) :)

Hmmm... typing in all caps, telling us this 'isn't a scam', excessive usage of '***'
Are you sure this isn't a scam? |

Excellent news - now encourage them to browse DPC for other shots - it would make a nice change for someone to like the shot's here and be willing to pay for them ;- ) |

Yeah, plus, it must be a pretty sweet job to surf the net looking for cool shots to put on calendars.
