With my recent purchase of my 50D I went to 8Gb compact flash cards. My computer has a built-in CF reader connected to the motherboard via Firewire.
Today I took a full 8 GBytes worth of photos and am importing them into Lightroom. It's been 2.5 hours and it's only 85% done. Seems to be much longer than it should be. I'm trying to figure out if it is the card reader, the CF, or LR.
How long does it take you to off-load photos from a CF? |

Using a Firewire reader, I can download a 4G card in about 5 minutes using Windows Explorer to copy the files. Loading the images into LR afterward takes longer, but definitely not 2.5 hours, more like 15 minutes (this is counting preview generation time). Actually, I never really know how long it takes because I walk away and go do something else while LR loads the images. :)

Likely a 2-fold issue.
First, definitely go out & get a cheap "UDMA Capable" CF reader. Even if you don't use UDMA cards, they support the latest speed requirements, and will make a HUGE difference (as compared to the built-in CF reader). I had the same issue with my built-in reader, and bought a $25 reader, and now get the same type of speeds that David referred to.
Second, do you import directly from the card, or copy the files first? Try following dwterry's workflow, and you should be pleased as punch. :O)

I suspect that your inbuilt card reader connects via usb as that is way too slow UNLESS your CF card is slow. Do you know how fast the cf card is?
I have a Sandisk Extreme IV via USB 2 and that takes a couple of minutes per gig to read, much slower to write though.
It could well be your CF card is the bottleneck as I have other CF cards which are much slower |

I suspect LR is creating previews as it's importing. Check your preferences. |
