Heres a question:

Do you think more people would leave comments if they had a choice of always remaining anonymous? I have noticed (and read) in the threads that some people dont like the authors 'getting back' at them during or after the voting.

I think it will help to have a check box next to the comment box allowing a commenter to choose to remain anonymous.. always.. or until they change that setting in their preferences.

Thoughts?

That option is available to members. It can be found under "Preferences." There's a box you can click to "hide my name" during commenting.

eta: I guess that doesn't really solve the "problem" of get-backs after voting. However, while I've had people disagree with my comments, I haven't gotten harsh responses. Venture to say, we're all grown ups and the expectation of courtesy *should* be the norm.

People need thicker skin.

The backlash of this would be noisy and disruptive to the DPC community in general. Massive "witchunts" would take place to uncover who left those fiendish remarks. How dare they hide their true identity!!!

Correct. But that remains effective only during the voting period.

What I mean is to have that effective even post-voting if the commenter chooses.

BTW - This should be a fun thread to watch. :-)

I think you are right. For some reason I dont think of the negative impacts up first. Oh well:-)

I'm not sure what kind of "getting back" you mean. I've never had anyone give me a bad time about a comment. (There was one Critique Club Review I did, where the recipient told me that what I said, wan't want he was after.) But I can't say that anyone ever tried to "get back" at me.

I think the anonymous during voting is a good idea. It might even be a good idea to make it a default. I have had the urge a couple of times to explain the image, to commenters. But so far, have resisted. On the other hand, I have had replies to comments I have made during voting, and in all cases the replies were civil, and not pleas for a higher score.

I think that comments that are forever anonymous, could lead to abuse and yet another form of trolling in DPC. Since comments are not obligatory to vote or otherwise use the site, I think you should be willing to stand behind what you say.

An anonymous comment of "Your photo sux rat butt..." does me no good. (I must also have some unresolved inner feelings about my images evidently.)

So, in short, I am against permanently anonymous comments.

I think that if someone is going to comment, they owe it to themselves and the person receiving the comment to take responsibility for that comment. Just as I've heard of backlash from feedback, I've also seen some really lousy comments ("this is really bad" "very ugly" etc.). I think that hiding identities will inspire more petty attitudes than this site already has.

Alex,

Makes sense. I am sure people considered this before.. but I had to kill this cat named curiosity.

Thanks.

I agree.

If the internet has proven anything over the last decade, it's that permanent (or as permanent as possible) anonymity is a catalyst to abuse and disaster.

Humanity is not ready for respect without consequence.

Well, maybe if they also discussed adding the ability of members to delete comments on their photos at will. Now that would be great viewing!!!!

How about the ability to delete members who don't comment? No maybe not. :)
