The 5D will be replaced with a new camera so I'm in the market for a new house. The 5D mkII seems obvious. But... I do take lot of candids (I have small kids) and find the 5D to be a little slow. Not in terms of bursts but shutter lag. It would be nice to nail the focus more often on those Kodak moments.
The 1D mkIII apparently is super fast and more 'instant' than the new 5dm2.
The local store has a 1Dm3 in stock and I have of course pre-ordered a 5dm3 (which I will need to cancel if I buy the 1Dm3...). I cannot afford to buy both unfortunately.
Any advice? I am VERY tempted to pick up the 1D today! The 1D has a low resolution while the 5D has twice the resolution. The 5D can film but I don't need it (although my wife would love it!). Both cameras perform per specs excellent in high ISO conditions.
What to do...
EDIT: I do of course not know whether the shutter lag is improved on the new 5Dm3

A 1D series camera is totally professional with many advantages, 10MP is ample for most things. When the 1D3 shoots it is like a machine gun so if you miss the 'Kodak' moment with a 1D3 then it was meant to be missed. I personally would go with a 1D series every time if budget allows.
Happy shopping.

I wholeheartedly agree. I'd go the 1D if I had the choice.

interesting question.
I'm toying with the 5D mk2 as well - but there is a lot about the 1D III that interests me - especially the gazillion focus points, and with a 1.3 crop it would split the difference between the FF and 1.6 crop.
One of the few real downsides to me is the weight of it over the 5D or any of the crops.
I shall watch this with interest. |

Owning both a 1DMKIII and a 5D, I can tell you they are worlds apart in just about every aspect. My choice when I want fast AF and know I have to nail the shot. Its the 1DMKIII every time. When I can be methodical and take my time and want to go to much larger prints. I pick the 5D. To me the pixel pitch of the 5D is really nice for fine detail in large print size, while there may not be that much difference in 10.1 to 12 MP when I print larger I see a bit more detail in the 5D file then the 1DMKIII, but in order to see that I have to go larger then 16x20(at this size I usually cant tell you which print is from which camera. Above that its minimal at best, But as a picky photographer I can begin to see the spread of FF 12MP and 10.1 on a 1.x crop. YMMV
