Hi everyone,
Last week Mashable opened nominations for their 2nd Annual Open Web Awards. The awards are broken into 22 categories which includes one for Photo Sharing sites. I would like to see DPChallenge break into that list and with our support it can happen. You can add your nomination for DPChallenge on my blog or at the Mashable site. Feel free to pass this on to friends and contacts so we can get DPChallenge the maximum number of votes. When they pass the first round I'll update everyone here.
Thanks,
Marc...

*Stop reading here unless you want a shameless pitch*

I'm working to get my company WorthPoint nominated in two categories. WorthPoint is a site to help you buy, sell and obtain information on Art, Antiques and Collectibles. Check it out and if you would like to nominate us you can do it here. Thanks for the support.

You post looked a 100% selfless until I read the last part.

Point taken. I've removed the second part. The main purpose of the post is to support DPChallenge, I figured a pitch for another site wouldn't be out of order.

This 2nd Annual Open Web Awards is it important? Never heard it before!

That's good of you to mention it, marcbenton.

And you did warn us that the 'pitch' was coming.

To me that's fine... no worse than posting a link to one of your photos and asking us to vote on it as we've done here many times.

It's all good to me. *grin*

Great question and one I thought about before posting. Important? Probably not but its a good way of increasing a site's visibility on the web and provide some recognition for great services. In terms of only being the second, remember the internet (especially the social internet)is still quite young. While DPChallenge was created in 2002, many others with higher user bases are quite younger (Flickr was established in 2004, PhotoBucket in 2003, iStockPhoto in 2000 but really took off after their acquisition in 2006, and last year's people's choice winner Vois in 2007).

Mashable.com runs around the 6k rank in page views with ~5 million a month. Last year there were 250k votes cast in the first award program. Here's a quick blurb from their site:
Mashable is the world̢۪s largest blog focused exclusively on social networks. Mashable will put your brand in front of the most tech-savvy early adopters, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, influencers, Web 2.0 aficionados and technology journalists. Mashable is also popular with bloggers and members of social networking sites - an increasingly influential demographic.

All in all it will put the site's link in front of A LOT of people. The argument could be made though that our population is high enough and the membership is comfortable with the current level. With larger numbers does come the risk of noise that can be found on sites like Flickr. I'm just trying to throw drewmedia and langdon some props.

disclaimer - i have NOTHING to do with mashable :D

No hard feelings intended. That was an honest reaction. Sorry if it came across the wrong way.
Thank you for the initiative!

Definitely none taken and thanks for pointing it out. I'm sorry if I came off defensive, I'm still working on my written communication skills :D

BTW, wanna trade your XSi for my XS? You get 550 more D's with the XS ;-)

I was sent a confirmation email that said, "*Reminder: One nomination per category per e-mail address."
So, I suppose any of us who manage our own domains & can catch any email sent to a domain could nominate as many times as we wanted to with fake addresses until it just got really boring. OK, fine, I have better things to do with my time (like cruz the DPC forums).

Reminds me of a scene in Dr. strangelove ...

The president on the phone with the Russian Premier telling him the US is about to Nuke Russia. We only hear the president's lines:

"I'm sorry, Dimitri."
...
"You're sorry, too."
...
"I'm sorry you're sorry."
...
"You're not any sorrier than I am, Dimitri."
...
"No, I'm not any sorrier than you."
...
"I'm sorry, Dimitri. We're both equally sorry, okay Dimitri?"

Thanks, Marcbenton for telling us about the "Mashable" site. I went there
and voted. Even if Mashable is a new site, it certainly is a way to give DPC a bit more
exposure.

I have to tell you I was NOT offended by your mentioning your own website in the hopes
that people would also vote for you if so inclined. (Actually, truth and honesty and
all that - I didn't take that option as I know little about antiques and collectibles.)

But still, we post our websites and solicit votes for images all the time, and I, along
with others, believe you were okay to post "part 2".

Good luck.
