Toujinbou

These cliffs are famous, about a 20 minute drive from my wife's family graves. I went there last year after her father's funeral. No ropes, nothing to keep people away. Most people walk just to see the beauty. High school excursions to this place seems crazy, but they go and they are giving a quick 'talk' not to mess around. Anyways, I knew a little about places (Like Mt. Fuji) where people go to die, but little about this place. Now there's a CNN report on the place...watch the video, it's pretty amazing and gives you an idea of what help does and doesn't exist in Japan...and the lunacy of some of the government organizations and what they tell people in need of help.

In Santa Barbara County, CA we have a bridge (Cold Springs Bridge) that is getting a lot of publicity due to the number of suicidal jumpers. While they are not nearly the numbers of Toujinbou, it's still pretty serious. Being a mental health counselor working in crisis intervention, I can say that the more barriers you put in front of a suicidal person, the more likely they are to reconsider. That's not to say that everyone can be saved, but it helps. Most people will say that people who really want to kill themselves will find a way. While that's true, I also see many, many people who, though suicidal, really don't want to die they just want to stop feeling so crappy. Sometimes just the smallest intervention gives them hope.

I did some research for one of my modules on the Mt. Fuji base area with regards to suicide. It was a real eye opener, I didn't realise the scale of the problem (especially with organised groups) until I read a few of the articles on the tree phenomenon.
