Whether you are for the guy or against him, it is sad that his grandmother did not live to see if he won or lost.

Sad indeed, it would've been nice if she could've seen him sworn in.

Now I am just waiting for the comments about her death being politcally motivated. (I wish I was being sarcastic with that comment)

I wish you were too :-( And can y'all remember when Obama was visiting her in Hawaii just a few weeks ago, and the GOP were trying to paint that as "Obama vacations in paradise during economic meltdown..."?

Rest in peace, grandma; you raised a hell of a boy!

Well it most likely will sway some undecided voters to his side.

Sad news though, not any sadder than anyone else dying though.

How would this news make him any more qualified to be president in the mind of an undecided voter? I'm not really looking for an answer and would very much rather keep this thread out of Rant. It just struck me as a very odd comment.

Yes it's very sad– made sadder because, win or lose, this is the person who made tomorrow possible for Obama and it's a shame she didn't live to see the result. :-(

Jeez.. I really hope this doesnt turn into a rant thread. I hope we keep the honor to an elderly life that ended minutes ago.

Because people will sympathize with him. If people are undecided 1 day before the election, chances are politics/policies/things that matter aren't going to be changing their vote. I can see something like this swaying a few people.

Edit to add that I don't think her death was politically motivated (giving someone cancer would be one hellova lot of foreplanning).

Statistics show that most people who are undecided seven days before an election are unlikely to vote at all.

The really sad thing is running for this kind of office is so intensive there was no real quality time left to spend with her. Our priorities get pretty whacked out which is sad but understood.

Sad news and tough timing indeed, but I'd bet that Obama's grandmother died content in knowing that she raised her grandson to be a happy and successful young man. She died getting to see her grandson reach the height of his life and that's a privilege few grandparents have. On that note, here's a trivia question that I don't know the answer to: How many US presidents still had a living grandparent by the time they reached office? Not many I'd bet.

I can't imagine many at all, aren't most people quite old by the time they hit president?

For those interested, here is a WWII era picture of Obama's maternal grandparents.

Well, McCain lost his grandmother (father's side) 39 years ago, but as he keeps pointing out, his mother is still going strong.

Wow...I hope is grandma's death does not sway a single vote. This is too important an election to base a vote on that. Like Obama says, he will fundamentally change America....and he will. Rather you think it is for the better or worse, he will change it.

I hope everyone at least puts some thought into this one !
