Entymology from Wikipedia....

The contemporary use of the term is alleged to have first appeared on the internet in the late 1980s[3], but the earliest known example is from 1991[4]. It is thought to be a truncation of the phrase trolling for suckers, itself derived from the fishing technique known as trolling.[5] The word also evokes the trolls portrayed in Scandinavian folklore and children's tales as they are often obnoxious creatures bent on mischief and wickedness. The verb "troll" originates from Old French "troller", a hunting term. The noun "troll", however, is an unrelated Old Norse word for a giant or demon. [6]

To respond to the OP (and stick tongue out at hijacking trolls ;) ), I dunno how it started here, but it appears to go back as far as the forum history does.

first troll-specific thread I could find

It's kind of funny reading that 6-year-old thread and realising just how not only dead but petrified some of the recently discussed horses are :)

"Socialist"?

Look over here... here we have a member of the Trollus Politicus family, commonly known as the "Political Troll". They're usually found foraging around internet forums trying to catch their prey by leaving out little bits of bait, and then they hide and wait for an unsuspecting victim to stumble upon the bait and swallow it whole. Then Trollus Politicus swoops in to engage the prey.

However, sometimes the bait is taken by a member of a rival Trollus Politicus clan, and then the two trolls will engage in what is often referred to as a "troll war", often dragging in other members of the two clans. These battles can be brutal, bloody affairs.

It would appear that an unsuspecting member of a rival clan of "Politcus Tollus" is in the area.

I forget. Are Trolls the ones who sit under toadstools, or are they
the ones who lurk under bridges in fantasyland.

In any event, we know they get out and vote, so it's a good thing the
rest of us do as well.

I wasn't trying to be funny. It was a sarcastic, bitter remark aimed at those who use the term easily and ignorantly to describe any form of progressive politics they do not approve of, as during the current US election campaign.

I imagined that, especially, anyone with your history would recognize this quicker than most.

well If I thought that the " " were for sarcasm which I don't :) sorry about that, I'm not much into politics, especially I don't care who will win in US...we will be scre*ed about the name of our country eventually no matter who will win
