I've been lurking this site for years and I just finally submitted my first shot. How do you get the distribution of points? Here are my current standings, it's pretty much going as I expected so far. I wasn't too happy about my shot, but I figured I just needed to jump in and start submitting so all my shots get better.

Your average can be found on your main page. For the specific distribution of scores, this excel sheet helps: excel sheet

You can see a voting breakdown after the challenge, but in-challenge, you need to use one of these vote tracking spreadsheets to figure it out. Unless you can do those sort of calculations in your head...

Still ESAD here, just under 5. It's been a baaaad bunch of dpco-basic challenges for me, and this shot is the best of the bunch on the theme. It got a favorite just now, thank you somebody. No comments.

A good score for me so far, but struggling to get and stay past the 5.6 mark. I had actually thought this one was one of my best and would be an easy 6, but what do I know?

I thought for sure I'd be in the low 6's... now I'm strugglin to stay in the 5's...

Ah! There's the problem! There's no pigeon in it! What was I thinking??

Started out this am at 5.9, now fluttering down like a...no, not a pigeon...maybe an autumn leaf on the cool October breeze....or some such crap.

Down to 5.52.

It's been a few weeks since I entered. Computer problems. Maybe I'm back.

I share the general comments about low scores. I thought my entry would be 1.5 higher. Have had two comments regarding colour and flatness. Need to make sure my monitor calibration has not shifted.

At the end of the day...I still like my entry. Home version will get some advanced PS'ing though!

Let's enjoy the ride!

Glad to see I'm not the only one that is frustrated by it.

Time to quit DPC perhaps...

Opened at 5.5 up to 5.6 and then the last 4 votes have knocked the wind out of score.

As yospiff says (no comments as to why) a 5.6 photo has been pulled down to a 5.0,

The details say use this technique to enhance your subject, maybe the voters are looking past this request.

Really love all the comments explaining why the falling score, as Melethia has said the scores say we were better photographers 2 years ago, if it wasn't so frustrating it would be hilarious. Maybe the new breed of young voters are better photographers. Or there is a 4x3 club out there.

Or maybe people do not like getting hammered on by people when they do leave a comment with the low score? I left comments and low scores based on my personal beliefs in the wildlife challenge and got flamed so bad I have swore I will never leave another comment again. (I have left a couple on outstanding images, but that is it...never again)

I realize it was not you that flamed me Brian, so please do not take this the wrong way, however when people complain about no comments I can tell you from experience that is one of the reasons why. :)

oh and since it is a scores thread I will post mine before turning mine back off and no longer posting to this thread, since every time I say anything on this site it gets twisted and becomes an arguement that I no longer have the stomache for. (ok, I have a large stomache but it has nothing to do with this...)

bassman... I agree with you. Some people can't handle the truth!

I agree there are those out there who hammer back at criticism. However, for someone like me and maybe quite a few others on this site... I appreciate some comments. I am sorta new to photography and I like having constructive comments for what people are seeing in my images.

Because I swear that to me, I have created something special... but nobody else seems to think that way. I would love to know what people think so that i can alter my perception of what is apealing and what keeps getting me these 4's and 5's...

With that said... My 6's and even now my 5's seem a thing of the past with this contest:

I have stated this before, but let me repeat it here:

The scores on DPC are lower than a couple of years ago! Perhaps the parameters have changed and we have been left behind? Perhaps we are the dinosaurs here and young blood knows better? Perhaps there is a more technically able group that are revealing our shortcomings? Or maybe, perhaps, we are just witnessing a new batch of users and members who just like voting low?

Whatever the cause, it is not conducive to level playing field voting and will only result in members leaving eventually. There is a more aggressive group here who want everything to change and question the way the site works. I feel this can only have a negative effect on DPC.

By the way, I have a great score of 4.8!

I think there are some really interesting takes at the theme in the challenge here, but I fear that since some of these are taking chances on the theme (and that is a very good thing!), the scores of those images are suffering. I'll try to comment on some of my favorites in the next couple days...

Personally, I am very happy with my 6+ score and the 7 comments I have so far
10/29/2008 08:26:25 PM · #74
How can you take a chance on the theme? There's either some motion blur or not. To make it even easier, zoom blur and long exposures were lumped into motion blur in the long description. Seems to me even a pair of shaky hands met the challenge this time around.
10/29/2008 08:58:48 PM · #75
yet the voters are fut up, as usual... as sanctioned by this place. how can you not take a chance on the theme? why bother if you're not taking a chance? what is more boring/heinous/gross than serving up the chronologically appropriate entry echoing the winners from the last challenge on this theme?
