The other day Iâm putting on the ear buds from my i-pod and my wife notices me stop and look carefully at one of the ear buds. She asks âWhat has it got somethinâ on it?â I explain that they are marked right and left and I was just making sure that they were in the proper ear. Well she looked at my like I was from another planet.
So hereâs my question â Does it matter to you what side goes where when using ear buds? Or I am as goofy as my wife think I am?

It is only important if you want to hear things as they were meant to be heard.
What was originally on the right in the original recording, would be on the left, if the buds are reversed. I assume this is not a video iPod. If it were, then the character on the right would seem to be talking from the wrong side of the screen.
Moving sounds would move the opposite direction.
Other than that, not a thing wrong with swapping them. |

I realize it pobably makes no real difference even for a highly steroized (is that a word?) song like Zepplin's Whole Lotta Love, I'm just kind of particular (my wife would say anal) that way.

Yeah, I can see how Whole Lotta Love would seem backwards. That might bother me, too :) |

It makes me crazy to have them in the wrong ears!!! Though I'm ashamed to say it took me longer than one would think to discover that they cleverly mark the ear buds :-) One day I thought there was something wrong with my iPod because the music sounded "off." Took out the ear buds and realized I had them in the wrong ears---it makes such a difference to me for some reason.
So, no. Not crazy! :-) |

No, you're not crazy. They're marked L and R for a reason, as explained previously. |

Well I think, I'm as crazy as you are, I always check that I'm using them the way they are marked ;) |

Actually there is another reason.........they are shaped differently to fit in the ear better. Mine are anyway. And yes I always put the left in the left ear, right in the right.

I check to make sure they're in their correctly marked ear every time, it'd bug me if I didn't, I'm pernickety that way too. :)

I'm pretty anal about that and unless I'm in a big hurry and not listening for long I'll check and put them in the correct ear. Now I'm using an over-the-head and in-ear-front-facing headset that has to go on right or I can't hear it, though the first time I had to figure out if I hear with them facing front or rear. |

Mine are the same shape so they fit just fine either ear - still I check'em every time :)

You miss certain notes if you inverse them. Sounds meant for the left ear shouldn't be heard by the right ear and vice versa. I'm still suffering from listening to Magical Mystery Tour with the plugs in the wrong way because my right ear couldn't take the drums b/c they were meant for the left ear. Listen to it and you'll see.

I actually had my left ear plug in my right and right one in my left ear.
So I am with you on this one... I just put them in and go! Haha |

So....what you're saying by and large is that we DPCers are a bunch of obsessive/compulsive, anal-retentive, control freak wackos?
I'm SHOCKED!!!!!

Yep, you got me. Neither typing nor spelling are my strong points.
Edit for spelling, duh.

Tongue-in-cheek aside, I'd be willing to bet it's not a word, but I'm gonna use ity now 'cause it's perfect for the context you previously described.
Another great "Stereoized" song would be that tune by The Dead "100,00 Tons of Steel" where it starts out with that train coming across the channels like it's pulling into your stereo.
And of course, "Unbroken Chain" from the Mars Hotel album....8>)

And if you mixed up your ear buds the train would be going the wrong way!

I have to say,I always check. But I don't like those earbuds anyway, they hurt my tiny ears. So I lean toward regular earphones, which are also marked, and which I also check... |

other stereoized songs-
Get Her Man Back- B-52's
Everybody Wants Some- Van Halen
Cry of the Vatos- Oingo Boingo
Hellagood- No Doubt
and stuff like some Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Loggins and Messina, with the sweet harmonized vocals are kind of stereoized |

I agree regular earphone much more comfortable, but mine slide around too much on when I'm on the treadmill so ear buds it is :(
