Thought it was about time I loaded up some images from the recent bay area sojurn. Here's some shots from the Monterrey Bay Aquarium for starters:

And here's Generale with his son Isaac in a valley inland from Bixby Creek at Big Sur. Those are young redwoods behind them.

And here's jdannels shooting at the edge of a 300-foot dropoff just north of Point Sur in a 40-mph wind :-)

...and this is approximately what he was shooting at, except he was using a longer lens :-)

The jellies are fascinating--so many shapes, sizes, and colors.

Thanks for a great trip -- glad you made it home safely. Here are the sample pictures I already posted when I got back:

And while Joe and I were down at Big Sur we came across a place where they are (apparently) rehabilitating California Condors and preparing to insert them back into the Ventana wilderness:

And here's the world-famous Bixby Creek Bridge, considered the greatest marvel of road building in America at the time of its completion in 1932.

I was just following your lead Robert. :)

And one that Bear told me to take. :)

When you get aome photographers who really know how to take pictures
and set them loose in photogenic territory, this is what you get.

Fantastic images, people.

I did some googling on the condors, and indeed there's been an active condor reintroduction program on the Big Sur coast at least since 2006. Google "condors big sur" and get quite a few links to sites and videos, awesome stuff.

Amusing side note: in the first line google asks me "Did you mean "condos at Big Sur?" Jejejeâ„¢

Funny, when I googled, it said "Did you mean big condoms, sir?" Bwaahahaaaa. :P

Great photos, guys! I was REALLY tempted to jump on a plane when I heard bear was going down there. Just not good timing for me. Looks like good times were had by all. Thanks for sharing.

Here are some more shots from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I was very surprised at how many shots "worked" -- the lightng, glass, and lack of reflections were all far better than I've experenced previously. I still had to go to ISO 400 (at least) for almost all the shots, which (on my camera) is quite noisy, so most of these have had a touch of noise-reduction applied. All of these are hand-held, shutter-priority mode.

No noise reduction needed on mine. Mine's shot with the 20D, minimally processed. Yours is with one of your several Powershots I believe, though I don't know which one. I used the comm f/2.8 Canon Macro lens, for what that's worth...

Well, that's why I have a PO Box as contact point -- anybody tries anything "funny" with that and I'll have the FBI on my side. But I took it out anyway ...

I thought I did pretty good getting all that info into the puny number of bytes Canon allocates that field.

Wow those are some fantastic pictures.

What was everyone using for inside the aquarium? Lens/settings/etc. The one time I went to an aquarium the shots turned out like poop.

Looks like you had an awesome trip! I was in Cali earlier in the summer but Joe and I were not able to cross paths... gotta get back there someday

I started out with 50mm f/1.8 at ISO 1600 and realized that was faster than I needed, amazingly. Wanted to get in closer to the Jellies so went with 60mm macro, f/2.8, ISO 800, shutter speed around 1/250 to 1/320. There WAS motion to be stopped, of course, plus stability issues as no tripod, so that worked for me. I sort of wish I'd gone to ISO 400 but to be honest I wasn't expecting much from the jellyfish images; I was pleasantly surprised. The "fish tanks" for the most part were a lot darker and there were issues there.
