I'm looking into buying a super wide angle lense for my canon, but the canon 17-40mm is almost 700 bucks. Does anyone know what the best 3rd party equivalent is? |

Both the Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 and the Sigma 12-24 f/4.5-5.6 are well thought of. I don't own either, but have seen alot of samples posted. Wander on over to DPReview.com, check out the Canon Lens Talk forum. Search for "sigma 12-24" and "sigma 15-30", you will come up with lots of info.
Neither of these is THAT much cheaper than the Canon though.
Another alternative is the Tamron 19-35 f/3.5-4.5. It is significantly cheaper (about $239) and is a decent quality lens. I own this lens and have been relatively satisfied with it.
As you can see, none of these lenses is very fast. If you really want wide AND fast, consider a prime, 'cause the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 is like $1300, and is a good but not perfect performer.

I think Mag has the Tamron 19-35 and really likes it.

My Sigma 12-24 arrived today. I haven't had a chance to shoot with it yet, but the results I have seen from this lens are impressive.

i have the tamron as well. it's ok but not in the same level as my other lenses. at the same time i wouldn't expect it to be either.
other lenses:
canon 50mm 1.8
canon 70-200mm 4
sigma 105mm macro
shots with tamron for a reference:
now that i look at these, it takes better pics than i was giving it credit for. |

In the sub-$200 range, there is the Vivitar 19-35mm f3.5-4.5 and the Tokina 19-35mm f3.5-4.5. PhotographyReview.com users have all commented positively on both **for the price** which doesn't mean that they're great lenses, but that they make acceptable quality shots when you get your head right about what to expect out of them. Everyone comments that there's lots of flare when shooting into a light source. I'd lean towards the Tokina because it's internal focusing.
Also worth mentioning is the older Tokina 20-35 which comes up on eBay, KEH and other used equipment sources pretty often, and generally costing about $200 or slightly more. It's metal construction, whereas the two listed above are regarded as having cheesy plastic construction.
These seem like pretty much the only options under about $500.... at least that I've found. |

Other possible alternatives that you may want to check out:
- Sigma 18-50 f/3.5-5.6 DC
- Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4 Di
I've heard a lot of good things about the Tamron... as for the Sigma, well... my local store is still trying to get a hold of one for me (almost 1 month already) so I can't comment or give first-hand experience on it. But I hear it's around the quality of the 300D's kit lense....
Oh BTW you didn't mention what Canon you have... the Sigma 18-50 has a smaller imaging circle that is usable only on APS-C sized sensors.

It's actually for my EOS Elan 7, non-digital, so I don't know if this makes a difference.
I wanted to thank everyone for their advice on this one. I've only got the kit lense (28-105) which I like a lot, and I'm looking into getting a second lense. I really like wide angle shots, but like I said in the beginning, I can't really afford the Canon lenses. |
