I took my Canon 300D on a Grand Canyon backpacking trip last week. We were headed down a steep bank where there were areas that you needed to butt slide. Halfway down my camera fell out of my fanny pack, flew down the mountain making at least 10 full rotations before coming to a stop 35 feet below. I was flabergasted and could barely speak, I can still see it in slow motion.
I rushed down to it, looked it over and turned it on. Lo and behold it only suffered a few scratches and fully functioned the rest of the trip!
Amazing.

O.K. then there was our Canon A300 P&S which I brought for my daughter to take pictures with. My husband took it on a day hike down a canyon and was sitting soaking his feet in a pool of water. The camera was in his lap and fell into the water! He snatched it up, immediatley took out the card and batteries. We dried it out for 24 hours, turned it on and viola! It worked too!
Can not believe that we could have TWO potential disastors turn out the way they did. Bravo to Canon for making products that can withstand the beatings of me and my family.

Your family should invest in some duct tape. :)

You guys are too funny :P
I was actually trying to carve weigh off by not taking the straps, it was bad enough that I was taking my 2 pound camera. We try to go as lightweight as possible, every ounce counts. Basically it came down to stupid choices that we made before it happened, I didn't zip my fanny pack the whole way after the last shot and my husband shouldn't have put the camera in his lap.
Hopefully we learned from our mistakes.
