I'm flying out to Austin in about an hour and was wondering if anyone knows how the wildflowers are doing down there and if there are any must-see areas. Thanks!

Brenham is good - about 2 hours east of Austin though.
Fredricksberg/ willow city loop are probably the best bet though, head west into the hill country along 290 and you should find plenty of wildflowers!
Closer to Austin, the lady bird johnson wildflower center (on south Mopac, about 15 minutes south of downtown, is well worth a visit (though they charge $7 to get in) Plenty of meadows of wildflowers there as well as some more formal gardens. Folks from fredmiranda.com are having a get together at the wildflower center on Saturday morning, starting at 9am. (when the place opens)

I am afraid they're past PEAK now...
You can tell because the daisies are up and the bluebonnets are down (a lot of beautiful fields on Mopac in Austin, and the bluebonnets are dying on the road) which happens when bluebonnets' season is about to be over.
Another place to go would be the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower center, last week was amazing.
One of their fields....
