I'm just a few blocks away, but I have to go to bed! I have a meeting in the morning I can't be burned out for. My neighbor just got a phone call from her daughter who lives in Harlem -- she said that it's absolutely nuts up there. People in the streets, stopping traffic, fireworks everywhere... a historic moment.

where did you see that? |
They said it on CNN |
Interesting that the popular vote they show isn't that big of a gap. Obama up by 3.5 million or so votes, which is the same amount Bush had over Kerry 4 years ago but with 40+ fewer electoral votes. |

One hundred and fifty years ago Africans were thought to be animals and used as slaves. Today we have an African American as President of the USA. It's a good feeling. An Historic night and glad I was around to witness it. |

Gee, no booing when Obama mentioned McCain... applause, in fact. How is this difference possible? |

Few losing crowds of US supporters lack those who will boo the other side. And many conceding candidates will do just as John McCain and stop them. Nothing new and only those with remarkable cynicism will remark on it. |

Careful now. It's President-elect.
Bush still has a couple of months to do damage. Wonder who he'll be pardoning in the next month or two...... |

Or those aghast at the spectacle. I have never witnessed a Canadian conceding Prime Minister have to temper the aggressiveness of his or her audience in the ten or so elections I've witnessed. |

Gee, I mostly listen to the radio ... here I thought that with Barry O'Bama we'd have the first Irish president since Kennedy. |

Ya know ...
There are a couple of phrases that stick in my head
Ask Not what your country can do for you...
The shining city on the hill ...
might want to add this one to the list
Yes we can !

I had to stay up and listen to that great speech. Great, great speech. The network I was watching showed a close-up of an emotional Jesse Jackson -- it made me teary-eyed, too. And then Obama, Biden, and their wives were glowing. Wow. |

Here's a summary. An exerpt:
Originally posted by NY Times Editorial: CIVIL LIBERTIES We don’t know all of the ways that the administration has violated Americans’ rights in the name of fighting terrorism. Last month, Attorney General Michael Mukasey rushed out new guidelines for the F.B.I. that permit agents to use chillingly intrusive techniques to collect information on Americans even where there is no evidence of wrongdoing.
Agents will be allowed to use informants to infiltrate lawful groups, engage in prolonged physical surveillance and lie about their identity while questioning a subject’s neighbors, relatives, co-workers and friends. The changes also give the F.B.I. — which has a long history of spying on civil rights groups and others — expanded latitude to use these techniques on people identified by racial, ethnic and religious background.
The administration showed further disdain for Americans’ privacy rights and for Congress’s power by making clear that it will ignore a provision in the legislation that established the Department of Homeland Security. The law requires the department’s privacy officer to account annually for any activity that could affect Americans’ privacy — and clearly stipulates that the report cannot be edited by any other officials at the department or the White House.
The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel has now released a memo asserting that the law “does not prohibit” officials from homeland security or the White House from reviewing the report. The memo then argues that since the law allows the officials to review the report, it would be unconstitutional to stop them from changing it. George Orwell couldn’t have done better. |

It was an awesome speech. I'm sure everyone hearing it is glad to have been able to hear it. I wonder when Mannequin-elect Harper will call to congratulate Obama. (Why the hell can't we have a charismatic leader in Canada?!) |
