You must vote on at least 20% otherwise your photo is marked down a point !! - there is a number of member's who enter challenge after challenge and NEVER vote, which I feel is just a bit unfair. Sorry just had to get that of my chest. - Regards Tony |

I would personally prefer to not have votes from someone who doesn't want to vote.

Me too. And sometimes there are circumstances that prevent voting on the 20%, even with the best of intentions. |

agree sometime you can't vote - but challenge after challenge after challenge -it just a bit unfair when members enter challenges and never vote and yet they expect to be voted on .. |

I do see what Tony means, there are some voters who enter almost every challenge, but don't vote at all. Seems like they are just using DPC as a posting ground for their own shots but don't want to make votes themselves. |

I've toyed with suggesting the idea that members be somehow "encouraged" to vote on a minimum percentage of photos, perhaps by having periodic challenges where only those who have met the minimum would be allowed to enter.
I had not suggested it because I came to the same conclusion as John. I really want votes from those who want to take the time to vote.
I do wish there were more active voters, but I can't really defend WHY. Really after 100 votes or so, the scores don't change radically anyhow, so what's the point of more votes?
I guess I'd rather see more comments, and I need to be among the first to take more time commenting, I will admit.

Tony I looked at your profile, you have received around 15,000 votes and
made 9,000. You have also received more then 3 times as many comments
as you have made. I think on average you are getting a pretty good deal.

I personally would prefer a system whereby, if you submit a photo, you're required to vote on another challenge before being allowed to submit again. It just makes more sense to me to vote in a challenge in which I'm not competing. Human nature makes it less likely that one will vote objectively when his/her own interest is at stake.
With that said, I also would like to catch up on my voting. With my day job and a couple of organizations I belong to, I just don't have the time I need to do vote as much as I'd like... My goal is to eventually match the number of votes received with votes given (maybe by staying out of the competition for ahwile).

Maybe we could make it so that if you don't vote the 20% minimum in a challenge that you have entered, you are suspended from posting in the forums until you do. |

I freely admit that I should vote and comment way more than I do and plan on doing just that. I feel a little guilty when I submit something and didn't give myself much time to vote and comment on photos. I might even be in favor of a system in place that required a minimum number of votes when you submit to a particular challenge. However, it really bugs me when people think it is their responsibility to monitor the voting or commenting habits of the site users. There are any number of ways that we are allowed to benefit from this site and it isn't anyone's job to make sure we meet some so-called ideal. It is for this reason that I have seen no particular need for everything we do on this site to be freely available for scrutiny by other users. It just serves to be some kind of status symbol so people can say, "look at how good I am". The truth is there is no way, by looking at the 'user stats', to know how a user is using this site or in what ways they are being a positive influence to other users. Looking at numbers can be fun but they aren't everything.

Well said, Tim!! There are indeed many ways for us to enjoy and contribute. Maybe we should just let it be? 'If it ain't broke, why fix it?' |

Well, I guess I'm doing okay on that score because I've handed out more than twice as many votes as I have received...
Challenges Entered: 9
Votes Cast: 3929
Avg Vote Cast: 4.6554
Votes Received: 1790
Avg Vote Received: 5.6363
But, I agree with Len's point--I don't quite feel right voting in a challenge that I'm competing in. I try hard to be honest, but it is difficult at times.

I agree entirely. I'm not keeping up at all with my contribution to the site. I should be dragged through the streets and flogged. In fact, that's probably too good for me.

As I've just started out I aim to try and give more votes/comments than I receive. Like many before have said I don't think its a good thing to make people vote before they enter a challenge. The first 20% they see may just end up with a 1 (or maybe worse) a 10.
I have learnt lots from this site, most importantly that we are all individuals and vote differently. Back to back comments for my wheel challenge were "nice contrast" and "more contrast needed"

My take on this.
Time to vote: I like it the way it is, if you do not have time (take the trouble) to vote on at least 20% your vote does not count. This prevents voting only one your own photo and requires a sufficient number to get a feel for the whole of the competition.
Forcing/preventing votes or comments: I do not like the idea of forcing anyone to vote or comment anymore than I like the idea of not allowing someone to vote in a challenge they are participating in. The former will bring down the vote (or at best give a bunch of identical votes that change nothing), while the latter prevents the most experienced from having a voice. However, that being said, I would not be opposed to preventing a person from votin on their own picture, we know what they think of it. :P
Rewards for high percentages: I like this! An occasional competition only for those with a certain percentage of votes or comments. Better yet, allowing only those with a certain percentage of helpful comments participate in certain challenges would be great. I would love to see the results of a free study between those with a high percentage of helpful comments. Can they practice what they preach? :D
BTW: I think I am doing well on the voting and commenting:
Challenges Entered: 0
Votes Cast: 243
Avg Vote Cast: 5.3128
Votes Received: 0
Avg Vote Received: N/A
Comments:
Made: 129
Helpful: 68
Received: 0
Now if I can just get a photo I feel is good enough to submit. Hmm, those do not include the current challenges.

i'm not trying to defend anyone here. however, if you look at the challenge history you'll notice that generally there are more votes per picture than entries.
so if you voted on EVERY entry in the challenge you still wouldn't have as many votes cast as you would have received by entering the same challenge. over time that could really catch up.

I think I have been letting myself slack off a little too much recently. I am pretty close to revamp my comment giving again.

This persons stats look bad, but what if they gave 2's just to be voting?
I think that's more damaging then their laziness.
Besides we see them and others for what they are. LOOSERS!!!

Personally, I'm not sure if I trust someone's vote if they've never entered a challenge. I'd rather see some sort of rule that says you have to enter at least one challenge to qualify as a voter/member (if you're not a paying member). Not sure what others think, but I think it would prevent cheating - if someone has five or six e-mail addresses they could weigh votes on the open challenges. |

I only vote in the challenges i have entered. (with one exception - I voted in Letting Go without entering). I vote on every entry in a challenge. I personally don't understand how one can vote on only a portion of the entries. Like going to the polls to vote and votiong for one office only when there are 10 races.
It would be nice to require at least one Challenge entry before voting. But then, those voting undre the 'no camera' category...are they then excluded as it thay cannot enter a challenge?
It would be a nice inentive or reward to have a challenge now and again for those that participate more than average in some fashion (be it high scores, helpful comments, overall votes, forum participation, etc). It might encourage more participation.
