I know little or nothing about photography . But as an engineer I study specs. and functionally closely.
So I was going to buy the NIkon D700 . then I read the reviews on the D3.
So I am now leaning towards the D3.

As for lens I am lost .
I think if I buy the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 and the Nikor 18-200mm lens. I would be OK

Any ideas from u guys.
I am interested in all possible photo ops.

One more thing, why are some stores selling the D3 for $2000 below the going rate of $4500.
Example LowPriceDigital is selling the D3 for $2445.00 . It this a genuine Nikon D3 camera ?

First of all, beware of prices that are too good to be true! Check the ratings of the sellers.

As for lenses, I'll let the Nikon crowd chime in.

I'd be extremely careful about the camera at that price. Some places send out used ones and things with no warranties, ect.

The 18-200 would not be a good one for those camera's both cameras are FX format and that lens is for the DX cameras.

why do you need the 70-200 and the 18-200 as well? apart from the 18-70 range, they cover the same focal range!!! get the 70-200 and 24-70 lenses, forget about the d3 and get the d700 instead! If your asking for advise it doesn't sound to me like your experienced enough to get the full benefit or even require the specs the d3 are going to offer you. The d700 will give you the same IQ and noise perfomance as the d3 (same sensor), and it will safe you cash, meaning you can purchase better quality glass!

have you considered the d300?! that may be more suitable depending on your shooting needs/preferences and level of experience!

That or maybe even the new D90 which is a really way nice entry camera. With the D300 or D90 the 18-200 would be a great all round lens for it from the wide angle to zoom. Otherwise what Caravela said about the 24-70.

prty sure the 18-200 is a dx lens not a FX
18-200 would be fine on a D300

D3 is a great camera but you WON"T get it for 2k

just starting out i think you would be a fool to drop 6k-8k$ without some priour knowlage/experiance
a complex camera will make your learning curve harder ..
that being said :
70-200 is a fine lens
to augment it you also want
24-70
14-24

or a handfull of primes ..

the camera will not take good pictures- the photograher does ...
