I think Jan (aka cutout) should do well in this challenge. Can't wait to see what he brings to the proverbial table.

Dear Lordy Lordy that was so so bad on so many levels!

Yes, cutout's work is a good example. I agree with pixelpig that this is a very difficult challenge. (Also agree with pixelpig about the black and white in colour challenge which I totally failed to "get"). I think I will try to empty my mind of "things" - always a good idea - and just try to see form and line and see if I get anything. After that, I will try to see if it creates or stirs any emotion or feeling, whatever. Well, its a plan....

These are all the previous abstract challenges.

Abstract I
Abstract II
Abstract Macro I
Abstract Macro II
Abstract Food
Abstract in B/W

Judging by past results at DPC you should avoid showing objects in a way that makes them clearly recognizable, otherwise you may risk DNMC for failing the abstract part. So I would first tackle the abstract part and then focus on the emotion part.

As mentioned, Deb's photo would be perfect for this challenge. Her use of bright colors and diagonal movement gives this image lots of energy which helps convey excitement and joy. Now had she moved her camera up and down to create a vertical motion blur the feeling in the image would be quite different. Rather then feeling joy and free, the birds might look helpless trapped perhaps conveying sadness or even anger.

I'm so confused...I had a shot in mind (a truly rare event) but now I'm re-thinking cause I don't know what this challenge is looking for. Does it mean abstract as in abstract way of thinking (i.e. cow heart with knife) or macro abstract? Maybe I can still work out my idea either way but I really only have one or two days to try it out...oh well, maybe I'll shoot it for Best of September.

I'm looking at the Abstract Food. None of it looks abstract to me. Perhaps I need to adjust my meds? [eta] I take that back. Jello Meets Fan is abstract. [eta] Took another pill. "D I'm gonna enter this one, & this time I got a title first. Gonna shoehorn an image into the title & then shoehorn both into the challenge. And then, tank.

I wonder if my lowest scoring shot ever would suit this challenge:

I also thought about finding some interesting looking wood patterns but I can't handle another low score just yet:

^^^^^ go away spammer (tanyacatherine)

Well I did my image last night and it sure did invoke some emotion. I was telling my wife about it on the phone and she got upset saying not to post it, she doesn't want to see it, she can't deal with it. She started crying and we ended up having to hang up. She called back later and apoligized but said she still did not want to discuss or see it. Still haven't asked her if I can still submit it but just not discuss it with her...I'll have to find that out soon.

Sorry to hear that. I assume it is on a very strong topic that touched her. Good luck.

I switched my entry to one that I really really like. It is bound to evoke controversial reactions.. primarily because without the title, it is hard to say what emotion it depicts. My wife said it is a weak entry, but I love this picture. I want to see how much it tanks just because it doesnt have the obvious non-abstract appeal:-).. and this will also be a big testing time to see whether my likes are in line with DPC audience's likes.

Cant wait to see a start with 1s and 2s.. (( in fact I secretly want it to be my personal worst so I can flaunt the "I think differently" quote :-)))

Haha in that case, good luck! My image isn't majorly abstract (you can tell clearly what the subject is) but I think it's a little unusual. No idea what to title it though. Can't wait to see the entries; I had an idea I loved but I lack the technical skill to pull it off, so I'm relying on my second one. I expect an average of 4.

It doesn't matter how strong my work is. I seem to enter abstract challenges every so often just so I can utilize the option to self-DQ.

Maybe I should go with this:

I think the tough part for me isn't "What is abstract?". As mentioned previously, there are a few previous challenges to give us guidance on that (at least guidelines on what the voters think anyways). The tough part for me is abstract emotion. Create an abstract that conveys emotion or stimulates it? It can be done but its not easy. The really hard part is - obtain an emotional response from the voters without getting emotionally attached to your shot yourself. AND do it abstractly. Bubbles probably won't do it. Judi's "Dance of the fairies!" might. .

I guess the other thing is: Does it have to speak to a particular emotion or emotion in general? Judi's shot speaks to me on an emotional level however I couldn't say it was an abstract statement about any particular emotion.

Sooooo tough.

The emotion is not abstract.

The picture is abstract, i.e. having no distinct object-as-subject or possibly no recogniseable objects whatever in the frame.

OK so you can't exactly snap emotion with a camera, so there's the rub, for sure.

I, personally, think that it's very much ok to use the title to nudge the viewer in the direction of the particular emotion you have in mind.

Then again, it doesn't say anywhere that the emotion should be given or specific. If it's love for you and hate for me and fear for Harry then it's emotion every time and the picture's done its job. I'm not at all sure that'll sell to the voters though :)

ETA: If I get a comment of 'I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking at/feeling', then I will at least indirectly have succeeded in inspiring homicidal anger. That's emotion.

That is abstract to you, you can have a recognizable subject and create an abstract appeal to it without destroying the subject.

That's the first thing I thought of with this challenge.

I'm thinking of an abstract photo that evokes or represents an emotion. As usual with abstracts, though, I have no clue what will score well, so I'm just going with something I like.

You're absolutely right, Brian (switches off Brian Clough dialect),
You can take a picture of a little girl cavorting around in a field of daisies and its a portrait of a little girl cavorting around in a field of daisies. It would be hard to see it as an abstract picture. This is what I meant by object-as-subject, the object portrayed being the little girl and the subject being one and the same.

You could, however, take the same picture and call it 'Joy of Spring', thus (arguably) abstracting the subject (joy of spring) from the object (girl cavorting etc.).

As for selling it to the voters...

For anyone needing a little inspiration or ideas for picture titles here is a nice explanation and list from Wikipedia:
