When you think about the photographs made on this stuff, it's kinda sad... |

Very sad, my first published photo was on Kodachrome 64. |

What are you even doing here? This is a site for digital photography. |

Well, *I* felt sad when I read it too, and I ain't shot film in what, 15 years? Kodachrome is so SPECIAL; it is an iconic product.

What's Kodachrome? Is it like some new spinners for the rims on my ride?

About ten years ago one of our local pros was cleaning out his film freezer and found six rolls of Kodachrome 32- apparently he hadn't cleaned it for a LONG time. When he got the rolls back it was like they had been fresh film. The colors were fantastic.
He also found a few rolls of a Kodak pro color neg from the 80's. It was asa 25 if I remember right (wish I could remember the name of the film). That stuff was amazing. He kept it frozen until fall colors. Fantastic. For saturation it was on par with Velvia.

Seems to me, and it may be just what I get for trying to actually think, but it seems to me....
That, we know quite well how Kodachrome responds to light. Seems to me, we know how different sensors respond to light. Would it not be possible to build software that would pretty well match what Kodachrome does? It would have to be done for each model of camera, or at least each model of sensor. But seems to me it could be done.
I love the look of Kodachrome, and some of the other films. But I just don't see the long term availability for film. Between the environmental issues, cost, and lack of convenience, I do not see film surviving a whole lot longer. I wish it would, but I think that within our lifetimes, that the end will come.
So, for me the issue is that before some of these great feels and looks are lost forever, why not do what we can to preserve them in a digital format? |

Fuji's Pro series cameras get fairly close to K25 or 64 straight from the camera with cloudy day WB and S2 film simulation settings. This is straight from the camera.

Hey vxpra, that Kodak color film that was ISO 25 is none other than Ektar 25. That was my favorite film when it came out. As a matter a fact I have one in my portfolio shot on ektar 25. There is a film I miss.

Digital photography owes everything to everything that came before it. There is nothing wrong with respecting that. |
