How many of you bought an extended service plan (Best Buy ESP, B&H Photo's MACK ESP, etc.) with your DSLR and why?
I was considering whether I should get the ESP with the new DSLR I plan on buying. I have purchased an ESP with my past two Camera's from Best Buy (A40 and F717) and have never even used it. But with a $1000-1500 DSLR I'm worried about the "what if:" a dead pixel develops over time, I somehow mess up the CMOS sensor while cleaning dust off of it, etc. In my experience an ESP is a waste of money 99% of the time, but I'm so paranoid about that 1%. |

Normally I don't go for the extended warranty, as my household insurance covers it. With the cost of my 300D, and the fact the company was willing to knock money off the camera if I got it (minus 80 pounds, plus 120 pounds), I decided the extra cost was worth it. Certainly is the UK a lot of highstreet shops make a huge margin on insurance (as well as the salesperson), but relatively little on the products themselves, so it's worth being wary what you actually get for your money. I get two years no-quibble immediate replacement. As well as that, I also believe I'm covered abroad, which I wouldn't be otherwise. |

I ordered a 4 year plan from Best Buy with my G5, apparently if anything happens including a scratched screen/lens or messed up CCD, i can just take it in and they'll fix it, or replace it if it's that bad...
:)
And the camera was still only $455 with the 4 year plan, on a really good sale. |

I got the 5 year extended for $179. Paid a lot of cahs for the cam & wanted to protect it. Parts & Labour ya know. It's worth it if you'e gonna dish out the dough for a nice cam.

I bought the extended plan only because I had a hosed up lens and the store said that if I wanted to go ahead and buy the extended plan on the camera body and lens, then they would immediately replace the lens. I did, they did and based on the paperwork if the body ever has failure of a level to cause it to not work, then I'll get a new one just as easily. Since it was Wolf, it wasn't the least expensive route but no other stores in Atlanta had a 10D and at the time I didn't know about B&H or Adorama or 17th St photo.
I buy the MACK from B&H, Adorama or 17th St photo routinely because for an extra $30 USD its kinda like a big UV filter for the whole enchilada. If I'm gonna spend $1650 for a lens, you better believe I'll drop another $30 for a piece of paper if that paper says I get a replacement. Course, on the $70 50mm f/1.8 I didn't really see that warranty program as terribly useful.

Check out what you get from your credit card or debit card or whatever you have ... some of them offer you extended warranties on anything you buy with them.

Bought a couple of years at Futureshop. If the camera breaks it'll have paid for itself, if not I still have the comfort level.

I sell elctronic product and ESP and for me it depend on the product. On a basic TV it's not worth it, but on a video camera, a digital photo camera or other mobile thing like a cell phone, buy it without hesitation as they are very small, very sophisticated, very expensive to repair and you'll use them in so many different condition of temperature and humidity in the summer and winter etc. I pay all camera at cost where i work but i pay full price for extended warranty and I take it anyway for this kind of products.
