How about a "Pop Quiz" for a Challenge?

Sort of like a surprise free study...

Pop Quiz! Let's see what you've been photographing on your own time. Submit an interesting non-challenge photo that you've taken in the past month (or weeek, or other arbitrary time in the past). It would be interesting to see what people have been taking pictures of when they're not out buying orange objects and searching for wheels.

No... you've missed the point. It's a surprise free study- no planning, no notice. Show me a picture you took in the second week of November, 2003, for example. I see lots of calls for more free studies, this would just be a slightly different version.

possibly just for members, and with a shorter submission time? Kind of like a speed challenge. That could be interesting.

I'm assuming that we're still shooting for ourselves and not just for challenges so we should have some challenge-quality photos that fall within certain period of time. You know how you have pictures that turned out really well but don't fit in any of the current challenges? This could be the time. Oh, and the photos should not have been entered in previous challenges.
