Well, at least if I can count right, Out of Place is the 200th challenge so far!
As a pointless retrospective, this icky chart shows how comments are varying over time. The moving averages are probably more interesting, showing that the total number of comments has been steadily rising for the last 20 challenges or so, while the average comments that people are getting is prety much static at about 13 comments per entry.
Unfortunately, as the challenge history uses little icons instead of text to differentiate members and open challenges, I can't graph these independantly (because I'm too lazy to edit 200 lines on a spreadsheet)

Along the same lines, we don't seem to be getting much better, or much worse come to that too

I find this one quite interesting:
It shows number of entries per challenge since the start. The cataclysm when members challenges were introduced is quite pronounced and the marked effect they had on the average number of entries per challenge.
it is also pretty clear to see the upward trend in entries for both the open (essentially the top line of points) and members (bottom line of points) challenges over time, to a state where in the open challenges we are again close to the point that caused the last major site change.

I wonder if someone could do this splitting up member and open challenges too.

You obviously have too much time on your hands :) I would also like to remind you of the saying regarding 'lies, damn lies and statistics'.

Hrm, I see a lot of colorful purty lines. Is there a statistics for dummies version?

heh - about 5 minutes total :) Excel does all the entry and extraction of stuff automatically - I just couldn't figure out how to turn little people icons into something I could graph meaningfully :)
