Hi,
I finally decided to get a 10D even though it is looking like the camera may be out-of-production soon (though Canon-USA is mum on this).
While perusing prices, I came across the below. Anyone done business with any of these folks ?? One annoying factor is that they don't list what all you get for that price. It's been typical that you at least get what Canon ships.. like a battery, some software, and some cords.

//store.yahoo.com/royalcamera/eos10d.html - $ 989.00

//www.amphotoworld.com/product.asp?id=cneos10d&l=Everyprice - $ 999.00

//www.digitalliquidators.com/detail.asp?pid=cneos10d&l=Everyprice - $ 1089.00

Out at BizRate.com the comparisons indicate that the better deals for the "basic" equipment (from 'rated' dealers) start at about $ 1350 or so. Seems like a big jump to me !!
Don't really want to buy from some outfit that no one knows much about....

I would be very leery of "too good to be true" pricing. I found the following info (all horrible ratings), but the bottom line is "buyer beware". Your call.

//www.resellerratings.com/seller1895.html
//www.resellerratings.com/seller1988.html
//www.resellerratings.com/seller2375.html

Good luck,
Rich.

Also beware that a lot of the "low cost" places will not be Canon USA-warrantied items, but rather "gray market" items that have been imported in to the U.S. with warranties offered by a third party. Sometimes, the instruction manual provided may not even be in English. (But they may offer to sell you one for an extra charge, along with all of the other "accessories" that are supposed to be included in the box.)

For some insight, listen to this phone call that I found on the net last year. The caller discusses a high-end Canon video camera. Pay attention to the price difference for the "international" stripped version compared to the US version. Beware of the same sort of thing for digital cameras. This particular place is actually pretty honest when the issue is brought up; other more slimey places jerk you around with fast-talk and it isn't until you get the package that you find out you were scammed...

(Only slightly tongue-in-cheek...)

Maybe this is proof that the D70 is meant to compete with the 10D, not the Kiss/ Rebel/ 300D...

That's what I was thinking.. The 10D has been out for how long now? Bit of a shame that the D70 is only just competing in terms of price and features with a 10D that's over a year old. :-)

If the D70 goes in above the 300D in terms of price, that just means the 300D has its own niche of being the cheapest DSLR.

Stay away from those stores,prices are fake,their stocks are empty and you must buy some packages with extended (overpriced) waranties to get the low price!

If you look at some forums regarding those retailers, you will find that they are not legitimate. Even looking at the feedback will let you know what problems you will encounter with them. Most of the time, they will tell you that the product you ordered is out of stock and will only be in after 2 months, so you better pay 1600 instead of 1000 for the US version. Or, they might charge you 1000 for the body, then tell you that the caps, chargers and hood strap are not included and will need to charge you 500 for it.

All I can say to you is, simply ignore those retailers. When I browse through photo magazines, I see Bwayphoto, Royal, TriState, DigitalLiquidators (I actually had a bad experience with them), I simply ignore them and move on to the more legitimate ones. BH photo's prices are usually very reflective of the actual market price. I mean, when you are paying for something as expensive as a camera, I wouldn't want to buy it in pieces just to save a few bucks. Resist the temptation.

Having just spent about 4 months in a serious research mode for the "best" prices on various photography gear.....I slowly came to the conclusion that whatever price an item is at either B&H or Audorama, then that price is the standard "discounted" retail price, within a very small margin from virtually the rest of the major retailers. If you can find a local store that is competitive with these two houses, then in my opinion, you are further ahead to purchase locally. If no local stores can meet these house prices, then order from them.

Occasionally, some big discount chains like Best Buy and Circuit City, plus others, will have individual items at a lower discounted price. Typically that is because in their particular market location, that item is not moving and/or they are discontinuing it on their self.

But, for the variety of photographic items available at B&H and/or Audorama, their prices will be close to the "going" discounted rate.

Just my conclusion after 4 months. These stores do a tremendous volume, and there must be a reason that they sell so many at the prices they do. I believe that many others are also looking to pay the least for the most, and they are supporting these houses with their purchases.

Local stores are well aware of these competitive prices, so a local store may be a good choice. Plus you are supporting your local community business, tax base, schools, roads, etc.

Also, my experience with local stores is that they are also well aware of the prices and competition from places like BHPhoto and are often willing to move on accessories or other gear so that you can end up getting a resonably competative price, purchase locally and have less hassle if something goes wrong. I've basically gotten about $250 worth of free stuff and discounts thrown in when I bought my D60 - worked out being the same as I could get it online, give or take $50.

It is at least worth giving them the option, if you wanted to see if they'd be willing to match or come close to a price. Also, at least my local store has a loyalty card scheme that actually brings their prices closer to reality too.
