I want to enter a challenge this week but the options are truly not motivating to get me to take a photo. It's a shame that there is really only 1 option for open challenges this week (and many other weeks in the past). I wish the 2 open challenges would stop being the exact same challenge with olny one small element changed that does not even affect the process in which a photographer thinks about creating and executing an image.

Now if only the powers that be would peruse those suggestions more regularly.

Sure, I could suggest some challenges. However, there are lots being suggested all the time and I don't think it's a matter of lack of ideas. It seems as if the 2 Open Challenges always are stemed off the same challenge idea. Wheather they be the same (Woody and Ducky - where the same image would be taken and a Woody or Duckey could be replaced by the other), or whether they be the 'opposite' (Morning and Evening - where the same shot coulf be taken, just at different times of the day).

Hmmmm. Sounds like you better take it up with Langdon I guess.

Er.. as you yourself suggested, there are scores of great challenge ideas in that forum, only a few of the original ideas acted on in favour of repeating topics (see this week's). His comment has been reiterated many times, yet you have argued for both positions just now.

Feeling particularly contrary today?

???!

My first response was basically, if you don't like the challenges that get run on a weekly basis it can be helpful to add some of your own suggestions to the suggestion list.

He made a valid response that there are many good ideas there already...I agree. In the end, Langdon is the one that makes the decision as to which challenges are run - so, he may want to ask Langdon about it (making the two opens a bit different from each other). Then again, this IS a Website Suggestion thread...so Langdon has been asked in a way. :-)

O course you 'could' look at these challenges in a different way:

For example, if I wasn't challenged to take a woodie or duckie photograph, I doubt if I ever would select this subject material. (And I might not ever learn how to take a numerous image) To a lesser extent, the same thing is true with morning or evening; What? I should get out there at the crack of dawn, or during evening activities!

It's rather interesting to move out of my comfort zone once in a while - or even more often than that.

I think what is meant would be to have the subjects be unconnecable. Like one be Stopped motion and the other achitecture. Two totally different subjects. instead of hot-cold morning-evening ect...

I guess you could use the week to create a FABULOUS free study image. See it as 'your' challenge.

KelvinC: I am in the same boat and totally agree with you. Not that I am trying to complain, but I really find the 'Ducky' and 'Woody' challenges unmotivating...so I won't be entering this week. I really think that given that it is summer (for most of us) it would be nice to have more 'outdoorsy'-type challenges rather than studio-type challenges. Plus, I do agree with you that Ducky/Woody challenges are really just about the same...Anyways, I don't know how everyone else is...but I am not a big fan of studio type shots...just don't find this type of thing interesting.

Oh, come on folks....
So the SC wanted to be clever this week....
I honestly half expected "Gardens" after last weeks "Lawns".
I've too have been really perplexed by this week's topics, but isn't that the meaning of the word challenge, to push one's self to your limits?
Challenge yourself, learn something new.

Agreed. Not every challenge topic will make everyone happy. It annoys me to no end that people complain about the topics. Surely everyone can come up with something for at least one of any given 4 active challenges. Or just take a break, join a side challenge, turn off your computer, take a shower, etc.

Actually, from my understanding, SC have nothing to do with what challenges run. That's all up to Langdon.

It annoys me that people get annoyed easily.

A couple of people have already mentioned this, but to carry it a step further...

I joined a DPC Olympics team, and I feel that I made a commitment to enter all of the challenges. So inspired or uninspired, I'm doing my best to enter a quality image every week. (with the exception of "hot." That one sucked.)

I was dreading the current Woody and Ducky challenges, but I literally worked all day yesterday and came up with more ideas then I've ever had for a single challenge. In fact, I've got a few more that I want to try tonight. I NEVER would have considered entering this challenge were I not obligated, and turned out to be not only a lot of fun, but a real learning experince.

I think that even after the DPCO are over, I'll continue to push myself to enter something every week. If I'm not immediately in love with the challenge idea, I'll have to spend some time figuring out HOW to fall in love with it.

Inspiration doesn't always fall in your lap.

lol, love the irony ;)

And, who said Woody had to remain indoors? am pretty sure he/she will be shoehorned into many a landscape shot.

Kelvin, I fully agree with you. The challenges should be different, so that people are more likely to find one they'd like to participate in.

I had a session with a model scheduled for last Thursday and thougt we could maybe also do something for a challenge. When I checked the challenges on Wednesday something like this went through my head: "Ducky. Right. Didn't we have that before? That won't work. So what's the other one? Woody. Great. Don't people enter a woody picture for challenges all the time anyway? Well, I'll have to wait for next week..."

Whoever said the woody or ducky shots have to be done in a studio??

I think part of that is marketing.

They want people to buy a membership.

They make the open challenges for anybody to compete in free of charge. But make the members challenges more appealing so you will be tempted to break out the debit card.

Yeah, cuz God knows Langdon is all about the sales and marketing as you can tell by the giant warehouse and billboards pushing all the DPC hats, mugs, branded camera straps & stuff. :P

Ya.. I keep seeing his stupid TV commercials every 5 minutes interupting my Jerry Springer re-runs at 3am.

Edit: I forgot to mention the mailouts saying I've been Pre-Approved for a Platinum membership at DPChallenge! I wish I had read the fine print before I
signed up. Pfffft!
