in the middle of town - got this pic of a heron taking off. No preparation time as the bird took flight as I was getting focused to take a pic. auto focus, no flash, ISO 100, 1/160 ...not sure what other info you need. What settings would have been better.

thanks
sue

A smaller F stop, IMO, to get a better DOF.. background is quite distracting. Focus is about right though. A little touch-up in Photoshop can improve this picture. :D Nice pic though.

I don't think this pic can be improved. It's just fine as is. :)

Like mentioned above, I would have shot this with the aperture wide open. This'll help in two ways. First it will help to blurr the distracting background. Secondly it will let you get an even faster shutter speed to freeze the take-off action :)

Definite a great shot for no prep time tho :)

Gr8 shot Sue, though a tad late for the 'out of place' challenge ;) I agree with jmsetzler, if the bird was in his natural habitat then a wide open lens would help the picture. I also feel the movement helps this shot

Was this shot near water? I only ask as I've heard in certain light conditions birds can often mistake a road for water. Your pictures are coming on in leaps and bounds Sue. I do have copies of some of your early pics just in case you need pulling down a peg ot two!

it would have been good for Out of Place

thanks for all the helpful info.....will go and have some more fun with the camera on the weekend.

There are wetlands and large areas of native bush very close to town so we often see native birds in a relatively domestic situation....just have to work on my birdstalking skills.
