For the longest time I had thought this same thing. GeneralE, I think I may have to kindly disagree with this. I like the idea of showing off our months best efforts. A month is quite a long time for a challenge if you think about it. There will be 8 other challenges (if you are a member) in-between each. It's kind of nice to have a breather and some eye candy after the the other challenges. Look at it as a seventh inning stretch.

I like the idea and don't see anything that would support not doing them monthly. I do have some questions about the objections raised by GeneralE.
Has it been shown that the other challenges receive statistically less votes/comments when there is a free study?
I don't think DPC would become just another Photo-Of-The-Month club. I think it would add another dimension to the site and greatly enrich the experience. Users would get to share work that might otherwise not be seen by the rest of the DPC community.
Speed challenges are significantly different from Free Study challenges, I think the two would compliment each other. As for monitoring by the site council/admins, I cannot comment on that.
The 'specialness' part, I'm not so sure about, I look at the Free Study challenges as a way to show off things I would shoot anyway. The other challenges that I shoot something specific for are still special.
If the Free Study challenges are Advanced Editing and are month-long every month, I would think there would be fewer, not more DQ investigations.

It should be considered, seems a lot of folks here would like it. Why not vote on it? Dont see how it is not a 'challenge'

I like the Free Study challenges. They give a little more excitement to those times when you're just out shooting and get something extra special. The image may not meet a challenge, but gets a chance in the Free Study. So, add another "yes" . |

Do the winners get on the front page for the whole month, or all 3 months ? :)

I like the idea of a monthly free study.
I've been away for about 6 months - mainly because the posts back then of people complaining about "not meeting challenge" messages, became a bit repetitive and boring.
As for the argument that it takes votes away from other challenges - well for me, I was so impressed by the quality of the pics in the free challenge, that I went and rated another challenge as well.
So I feel it makes people stick around longer, as it gets them interested in photography again.
(Well that was certainly the case for me).
At the very least - why not have an "Outtakes" monthly competition, where people submit photographs that they took during the other challenges of the month, that they weren't able to submit |

nothing else is being done to limit the number of entries for challenges, so why should we limit ourselves here when so many people want this?
Originally posted by GeneralE: 2. Undermines the basic concept of DP Challenge -- it just becomea a "photo-of-the-month" club. |
it's still a challenge. we're picking which one is best. i don't see how it would undermine the site at all.
i'd also venture to guess that a lot of the people that submit here think of this as their primary photo site.
Originally posted by GeneralE: 3. Doesn't leave much room for Speed Challenges -- there's already too much to keep track of. |
i'd gladly trade in speed challenges. as i've said too often before, the speed challenges that we've had most often fall on holidays when myself and a lot of other members are too busy to participate.
i'd much rather look at photos that someone has taken a month to do then wade through snapshots that people hurried up to post by midnight.

once a month is still pretty special. it's an eternity in internet time.
Originally posted by GeneralE: 5. More DQ requests to deal with. |
if it's an advanced editing challenge, there should be few dq requests. only those based on date or multiple photo combinations would be considered for dq, so i don't see a huge problem. feels like you're stretching for reasons to diss the idea.

the only thing that separates registered users from members is $25. experience has nothing to do with it. it's not like it's a real exclusive club or anything...

I'm all for a monthly free study. One of the best parts of being "amateur" is we can shoot whatever we want in our free time. Sometime's it's easy to get a "DPC Mind" - where each pic you takes must be "dpc legal" and every subject you shoot fits a weekly theme. I think Free Study challenges will keep us shooting pretty pictures as we see them and leave a whole lot less shoehorning into the weeklies.

Not to diss the idea, just to raise for consideration what I can see as possible concerns. You bring up reasonable responses ... that's what discussion is all about. Unless maybe you meant "diss" to be short for discuss .... |

Haha! Made me laugh, although I do like the idea of a Free Study each month...perhaps, as an offshoot, we can have Free Study Speed Challenges monthly to make up the time in between?

I totally agree with this. I am getting tired of hearing, "this doesn't meet the challenge" I even got it on my "motion blur" shot. grrr...
I say let's keep the monthly free study challenge.

Sign me up for a monthly free challenge 4 months after I win the lottery and get aquainted with a newer camera and some impressive glass :P
In the meantime I'll just submit a voter time waster shot that will get a 5.0 average.
IMHO a monthy free challenge will just make me lazy and not go out there a find a shot that will meet a certain topic. I need to adopt a cat :P
Note: Sarcasm.

The only thing I could possibly add to this conversation is that if it was decided to do a monthly/quarterly/seasonal free study type of challenge that the 2 week voting period (like in December) be adopted. This would definately help to alleviate some of the concerns about too many shots to vote/comment on. I know that there were not that many entries back in December, but there are 310 this month... |

I am very much in favour of the monthly challenges, it makes me look for other interesting photos that aren't constrained to a subject - bring them on... |

But it's excruciating waiting that last week, getting only 1-2 votes per day...

YES ! Monthly free study !! Probably a longer window to 'score' the entries would be good - so as to not interfer with other Challenges so much. I like it ALL and spend the time scoring and a few comments for every Challenge. I may go a month (and have gone longer) where the Challenge topics just didn't work for me and I didn't enter (c'mon.... a Mavica 81 is a toy). becasue I knew it would be difficult to do the subject any justice.
But a "free study" means that I can take the time to see what (if anything) that camera can do... my way. AND... I ought to be getting my 300d in May sometime (woohoo). Then I'll enter everything...
