If I have a 400mm lens do I need to shoot handheld at 1/640 or faster? (taking the crop factor into consideration)

So if I can stay above 1/640 my shots will be relatively sharp?

Sounds about right.

The rule of thumb I go with is 1/(focal length) or faster. If your crop factor is about 1.5 or 1.6 that equates to approx 1/640 secs at 400mm, other things being equal.

Well...just cause it is over 1/640 speed doesn't guarantee a sharp image especially if ya is a movin'!

Obviously it depends on wthether you've got any in built image stabilisation in your camera or lenses, and whether your subject is moving etc, and lots of other stuff

*thinks out loud* I'm guessing the resolution of your sensor will also be a factor (and how big you print/display your pics). The lower the resolution, the less apparent camera shake will be?

Wow. So if I drink, then get winded, sit down, and then shoot at 1/640 i should be ok?

If I was doing that why would I be taking pictures?

Ok, so, after all that, ummmmm

If I am standing and trying to hold the camera steady and not shaking the diddley whap and not drunk, can I expect relatively sharp images if I shoot 1/640 with my 400mm f/5.6 of should I aim for a faster shutter speed?

yes---so long as there are no other variables---use iso400 you should be ok---with my 100-400 i can get away with a little less than that sometimes! depends on just how steady you are---on birds i shoot ap iso 400 f/5.6 most of the time

Okay, now that you've explained yourself I feel confident in answering your question :)

More than likely yes.

I can usually get by with the miniumum focal length rule with my 1.6x crop camera. I have a 300 F4 that I regularly shoot at 1/325 or whatever it is, and get good results. However, sometimes I jitter and ruin the shot. I usually shoot in bursts of 3 to make sure that I get a steady image. I try not to run the ISO past 640, but I find myself running at 1250 a lot in bad lighting.

its better to have a steady shot with gritty noise than a blurry shot without noise.
