I hate to ask, since most people who do end up crucified, but I'm really baffled as to the score on this one. What did you hate about this picture? Did it have any redeeming qualities at all? I have 1 comment, and it mentions the pp on the eyes, I did lighten and sharpen the eyes, but nothing else. She did have makeup on. The ice cream is really that color (black raspberry flavor, purple toned). And I would consider ice cream to be a sweet. So, there ya go, let me have it. Oh, it scored a 4.6.

Hey Kelli. I didn't vote on that challenge, but I did have a look at your image in PS just now. IT looks soft to me, nothing in crisp focus. Also, it needs a bump in contrast, that's why it looks so light and washed out. I bumped contrast about +15 and it helped. The other problem is that she is sooooooo centered in the frame, nothing dynamic or interesting about the composition. While the idea is sound, the execution left a little to be desired. If scoring, I'd have given it a 5. :/

Also, the challenge was "Sugar," not "Sweet." I didn't consider this DNMC, but I admit I favored the pure sugar entries.

Well, I tend to go by the descriptions in the challenges and this one was ...snip... "Photograph some sugar or something sweet that contains sugar." Now I wonder if at least some of the low votes were DNMC votes...? |

I honestly doubt DNMC had anything to do with it. Only 23 votes less than 4, and no 1's, no DNMC comments.
For me, overall, it just seems to come across as snapshotty image, and a lot of that derives from the awkward cropping and the overall blurriness. I actually find my attention more focused on the reflecting sunglasses than I do on the ice cream. And even if those weren't in play, they eyes command more attention than the ice cream, but the ice cream, per the challenge topic, ought to be the center of attention I think?
Good advice from idnic as well.

Here's a quick (very quick) redo using Focus Magic plugin to crisp it up to give an idea how it would look if it were sharper, and some apply image/soft light mode and shadow/highlight, then an extreme crop. For what it's worth.

Thanks everyone! I might have to look into that focus magic filter. My lens seems to be more soft than most. And, I think my eyes are getting a bit soft as well, lol! |
