I received many great suggestions on this site concerning buying a new computer for photo and video editing. I was looking at the HP's through Costco which allowed you to customize the model you wanted. Everyone said build your own---I don't think I could honestly build my own so I started looking at those companies that allow you to customize everything and then build them for you...someone suggested Cyberpower, and I looked into that company as well as MagicMicro, PCUSA, Portatech, Velocitymicro, etc. I read the reviews on these companies at resellerratings.com---and you read some good experiences and then you read the horror stories. At this point I don't know what to do--I've probably made this whole process harder than it had to be.

You are definitly making this harder than it has to be! lol I'm not sure if you do some really hardcore video editing and such, but even with that, any current model computer by any manufacturer will get the job done.

My video card bit the dust two weeks ago. As the computer was 4 years old with 500megs of ram and a pentium III, I decided I would be better off replacing the whole thing. I went to exactly two stores, walked home with a new CPU that's a bajillion times faster than my old machine, 3gb's of ram, dual core, yadda yadda. Less than $450 with tax.

I was editing hour long DVDs on the old machine, so imagine how blown away I was by the new one!

My point: There's really no reason to spend a fortune or put that much effort into a computer. At least not for me, and especially considering the average shelf life of technology. Get yourself a good monitor though! That'll make a big difference.

Just my philosophy, which I'm sure will vary quite a bit from the techno gurus! :-)

It honestly really isn't that bad to build your own. All you need is a screwdriver and you save yourself some money and headaches.

Here's a quick and dirty guide on how to put one together if you want to take a look.

Once you decide on what parts you want, you are home free. It will take you about an hour or two to put everything together and another hour or two to install the OS.

It's cake to do, just have to have a little patience.
