I'm new to this site and just became a member. I'm trying to submit a picture for the free March study but it says that the file can't be any bigger than 150Kb, when I get it that small the picture is extremly small, and when I enlarge it big enough to see it has become so pixalated I would never dream of submiting it. Help, am I doing something wrong?

Clint,

The easiest way I have found is after you have done whatever editing you need to do (and is allowed for the challenge) do: Image>Image Size, set the longest dimention to 640 pixles. Then do: File> Save for Web, adjust the slider for as close to 150K as you can get without going over. I think you will find that the picture displays just fine.

It worked Dick, now if I can just get the freak'n thing on the site, either everyone is uploading pics right now, or my internet is acting up.

Remember that you can submit and resubmit to check to see if the image looks good on the site until the deadline of the challenge.

I tend to use Fit Image, so I don't have to think about which is the long side. It'll use what ever default interpolation you've set (you should set it to bicubic in your preferences - or bicubic sharper for decimating in Photoshop CS)

File->Automate->Fit Image

I've an action recorded with this set up as height and width at 640 - this means the end result is always with the longest edge at 640 and the other scaled appropriately.

Then I'll use Save For Web, and use the 'Optimise to File Size' menu option, set to 147Kb and the program will automatically work out the best compression ratio to use.

When you resize with the tips you received here, you should consider whether the pic needs to be sharpened a bit via the Unsharp mask. Usually, reducing an image decreases its sharpness. Just be careful not to oversharpen.

That's the great thing with PS CS - the bicubic sharper and smoother interpolation options have largely done away with the need to do step interpolation for enlarging or sharpening after resizing for the web - it's pretty good!

But if you haven't upgraded, it is good advice.

Go to Image size
set your resolution to 300 dpi
and pixel dimentions 640 pixels
(constrain proportion tick)
after that just go to save as jpg
Works realy well
sience I start saving my pics this way
they are not grainy

Is there a place or website that teaches how to do resizing larger and smaller? I have paint shop pro 8 and when I go and try to resize it It won't let me achive a size I need for example 8x10? the numbers change on there own? I need a good understanding about resizing. I am trying to use Cafe Press and need to make sure my pics are the correct DPI and stuff for the pic's to be placed on the merchandise. thanks
