Congrats on the new camera, Bob! Don't forget to ask for a discount from UPS lol.

Thanks everyone for the congrats on the new toy. So far I've spent a great deal of time going through menu's figuring everything out. One thing is for sure. There is a huge difference between 6mp and 12mp.

I know, it's double!

However, it still amazes me. This camera is built like a tank and the 6 frames per second will be great for my sports shooting. Especially football and track meets. I hope to do a lot of shooting this weekend.

Why do people lie? There is one photo that was in the long exposure challenge which is a shot of a guy on a racing bicycle. It is a very nice pan shot, the rider is sharp but the wheels and the background are blurred, great pan shot. But they claim it was a 30 second exposure? wtf? And if it is 1/30 which is what I think it is, then it certainly is not a long exposure.

there is another one which has the moon in the shot. The moon is perfectly round but apparently it was a 107.7 second exposure. If you take a shot of the moon for a almost 2 minutes, the moon is going to look more like an egg isn't it? not round.

I guess some people interpreted the challenge as "long exposure for the subject" and that is cool, interpret it any way you want, but why lie about the length of exposure? or am I wrong and somehow there is a technique that I am not aware of that allows you to shoot a racing bicycle for 30 seconds and still have the the rider tack sharp? Even riding beside them in a car at the same speed you could not do that.

Ok, that was my first rant in a long time and I feel better now. :)

Relax, Ernie. For a moving bike, even 1/30s is a pretty long exposure.

And the last time I entered one, I very definitely was thinking "longer than you'd usually take, to produce an effect you don't usually see." I wasn't thinking "it has to be longer than X."

But trust me, if you do that type of long exposure and don't make an interesting photo, you get killed:

As for the moon, which shot? You don't know what the photog did. I have several shots with the moon in them that are quite long, but because I reaimed the camera mid-shot, the moon is crisp. For example, this shot was exposed for even more than the 4s I listed, because the memorial itself was about 4s and it took time to reaim:

Ultimately, I think the question you have to ask yourself isn't "why do people lie" as much as "why do you care so much?" And not just because they may not really be lying.

As I stated, the fact that some people thought of it as "long exposure for the subject" is fine with me.

My point was that there is no way possible that bike pic was 30 seconds, or the moon photo almost two minutes.

As for the "why do you care so much", with all due respect I was not asking to be analyzed. (maybe one of us, or both of us are watching to much "House"?)

If I understand what you are saying about your shot shown that includes the moon, you mean that you had your camera on tripod, framed up the moon and hit the shutter, then covered the lens while you lowered the camera angle to exclude the moon so it did not blow out, and did the 4 seconds on the monument? That is actually very ingenious, and it was a great result. If that was the case in this moon photo then I am certainly off base, however this was an almost 2 minute exposure, not just a few seconds.

For the two shots I mentioned. One of the photos (moon shot) the photog says that he was doing experiments with the bulb setting and was not sure how long it actually was. For the cyclist I got an irate pm stating that it was 1/40 not 30 seconds as was originally listed on the photo, that the original photo they had uploaded was 30 seconds and they forgot to change it, and how dare I question it!

So mystery solved. Likely no malice or intent to decieve in either case. The first was an honest "not sure" and the second one, well I will not state my opinion on that. :)

i'm not only writing here, i even entered shots in free study and abstract emotion. very exciting... ok, i've got to go and fold laundry now. who said being a mum isn't fun?

I was expecting my D300 yesterday via UPS. I took the day off work so I could be there to accept it because I knew it required a signature. At 2:30pm, the UPS truck pulls up in front of our house. The driver goes back in his truck to get the package. He̢۪s back there for about 2 minutes. He then walks back to the drivers seat and looks at his scanner, then goes back in the package area again. He̢۪s there for another minute. He then comes to the front and looks at his scanner again. Now he gets on his cell phone to make a call. All this time, I̢۪m watching him from the front door. He ends the phone call and starts to drive away.

I yelled to him and told him I was expecting a package and I paid for second day air for yesterday̢۪s delivery. He said the package was not on his truck. I asked him where it was. He got on his cell phone again and made another call. He found out that it was accidentally put on the wrong truck. He told me that the truck that contained the package would be at a metal fabrication shop for a pickup about 4:00pm and that I could meet the driver there and pick it up. So here I am driving to another part of town to meet another UPS driver to get my package.

The things people will do for a new camera.

What a camera it is though!!!! Now comes the learning curve but I can̢۪t wait to get started.

Woohoo! Congrats! I was gonna say, I could have picked it up for you. Then I could have tried it out for you and everything!

Then you could have taught me all the new features.

Oh yeah...and why aren't you answering your email? Having to much fun???? :)

Welcome home Christian.

This should probably be in Personal life but I will play this close to the chest.
My dear wife of 25years will be turning 60years tomorrow, and the big news is that she has no idea that at the local boat club tonight (Sunday) where I have said I will take her for dinner, will be 40 of her closest friends and family who have come from afar for a surprise party with balloons and a monster 3 tier cake, so I hope all goes well, She has not seen one of her daughters for 2 years so I think the tears will roll.

Just wanted to share this with all the team suck members.
