Cool! Now save up some bucks and go buy yourself the Canon 10-22mm lens. It's an awesome super wide-angle lens and it will work great with your 350D.

I went out shooting with it, and it works beautifully!!! I still need to learn how to use it, but I got some wonderful shots of my family and a few flowers (my landscapes kinda failed, lol, couldn't figure out how to manually mess with exposure...time to read the instructions!) before it started raining.
I'll add the link in a bit! |

I'm actually used to my p&s's 10x zoom (which I know doesn't translate well into mm-type lenses) and I use that to take candid portraits of random ppl, so I was either gonna get the...70-300mm (I think that's what it is?) for zoom or the "nifty fifty" 50mm f/1.8 b/c apparently it's a great lens...no L-glass for me yet tho :( college loans :( |

Canon makes a few lenses in the 70-300mm range.
The Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM (average price $193.56)
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (average price $588.53)
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM (average price $1,166.11)
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (average price $1,439.74)
My daughter has the II version of the first lens (Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM) and she gets some very nice shots with it. It's certainly not one of Canon's best lenses, but then it doesn't cost an arm and a leg either. :)
I've never used one, but lots of people like the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. Ultra light weight, sharp, good bokeh, and very inexpensive. IOW, a very good lens for very little money.
RTFM and have fun!

Oooo, thanks for the info! That first one sounds great! The rest are a bit too expensive (my absolute limit on price is about $250).
Are lenses made by Sigma or Tamron just as good as canon's lenses? |

I'm afraid I can't help you much with that. I've used nothing but Canon lenses for the past 30 years or so. I always thought it made sense to buy lenses and other accessories from the same company that made the camera. It's an electronic system and the individual pieces fit and work together by design. They make great equipment too. Check out the shooting gallery at any major sporting event. Almost everyone will be shooting with a Canon lens. :)

That's very debatable, and you'll find lots of debates by searching the forums here.
Both Sigma & Tamron make good versions, but (just like Canon) their great lenses are at the upper end of their price range as well.
There are lots of very good "general purpose" lenses around:
A ton of users here vouch for the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon
The Canon crowd (myself included) like the Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM.
Not sure on price, but you may be able to find a good used version of either lens on eBay within your range.
Oh... and congrats on the new toy! :O) |

Dusty sensors are a fact of life with DSLRs. Fortunately it's easy to fix: The Copperhill sensor cleaning method

Oh yeah? Well, my old p&s's lens was THIS!! Even AFTER I cleaned it! lol...nah, my sensor's fine (so far....), did some shots today up to f/36 and no dust bunnies...sorry about yours tho :(
Do any of you other XT people find yourselves having to manually compensate for exposure...? I seem to be doing that a lot in order to not get a billion blown-out highlights everywhere.
As far as lenses go, I'm going to go to our local camera store to borrow the 50mm f/1.8 for a day...also maybe the 75-300mm.

Don't be too quick to jump. The K200D and K20D are great cameras. I have used Canon 300D and 30D, the Pentax cameras are better in my opinion...sorry Canon users, but it is my opinion. :)) |

Like most things SLR - it depends on the situation. I find I'm often bumping it up. But the beauty is that you have the option. SLRs are all about possibilities.
I often shoot in P mode - similar to automatic, but A limits some settings (like high ISO, RAW) and pops up the flash. When I want to do something creative, I use Tv or Av to control the shutter (long exposure) or aperture (deep/shallow DOF). |
