Before and after might be interesting to see. I think that someone actually posted something that had been "redone" using voters suggestions. It was a lakeside sundown kind of thing....
Anyway I liked both versions.
I have to admit that I was previously against breaking this down into smaller contests, but I think that the point here is to learn something. And I am not learning much from the very limited amount of comments that I have been receiving.

I think that one day, drew and langdon will open a critique forum here. When this happens, life is gonna be peachy :) A forum like this will allow users to get better and more feedback on a photo, as well as learn how to critique... it would be fun :)

Might have been me.
before
after
Just slightly different post-processing...not a huge difference. I just noticed that the 'after'version needs to be rotated a degree or so too.. |

1) We can go back to any photo and add a new comment right now 2) Anyone can start a "rant" thread on "Photo XYZ" 3) My idea of "Before and After" would be to complete re-shoot the photo
One week is not enough time to: 1) Vote/comment on 100+ current photos 2) Create quality entry for upcoming challenge 3) Review results of just-completed voting; read others' comments, add new comment in light of others' evaluation or photographer's comments, etc.
As far as I can tell, Step 3 does not occur here; maybe a LITTLE in folks corresponding privately. The back and forth discussion of a photo is largely lacking. |

So, lets pick a photograph and let the learning begin!
How about #54. Right in the middle?

Barbara - I really liked the flat-ish colors of your photo, especially the blues of the water and sky and the deep rusty red of the bridge and the boat covers (?). It reminds me of a misty morning on the water...no one's out yet and everything has a sort of heavy wet feel. If it had been sunny, it might have been nice also, but a totally different mood. Plus, I would have wondered why all the boats were at the dock on such a nice day :)
Compositionally, I think it could be stronger. The bridge kind of obscures the horizon...the corner of the dock is cut off...and overall it's a bit 'centered'. I think that the line I can see the boats following in the background that seems to go under the bridge and around to the left of the dock, then curve in front of the dock is interesting, and would have been stronger if the curve of it had been emphasized instead of truncated. So overall, I think I would have preferred for the vantage point to be a little bit lower and to the left...but I have absolutely no idea whether that would have been possible :) |

I'm glad you posted Barbara, because I wasn't inclined to offer criticism of someone's photo in the forums without knowing that they welcomed it.
The idea worked really well. I love the bridge, and the suggestion of water as a second roadway. What I disliked were the details. There is something in the lower right-hand corner of the photo (a fishing rod?). The edges of the photo seem blurry, and the mass of boats is kind of distracting to me. Maybe if you had moved to the left and gotten some more open water by shooting down the channel? There are also two things you probably couldn't do much about - the gray light is kind of dreary, and there is no gap between the bridge and the horizon, which looks a little strange to me.
I hope this all makes sense.
