Is it possible to overlay a grid breaking your image into thirds in photoshop?
One that adjusts according to the shape of your photo?
Also - does the rule of thirds apply if a pictures dimensions are changed? ie - to a panoramic photo? |

Go to View and pick New Guide from the pull down menu. Place *as many* lines where you want in your image using the dialogue box (pretty intuative - you'll see). You can also move your guides after using the move tool.
Not sure on any hard and fast rule for panoramas but I guess you could use the Rule of Thirds - maybe splitting the image in 3rds vertically only. Just remember rules were made to be broken...live dangerously!!

yup! An action to do something similar is available in the execellent and free DPReview v7 Action collection:

It was one of Danny Rafael's "Stupid Tricks" action adds gridlines to bisect an image using percentages to calculate the position rather than absolute size. I modified it to make it draw a "grid of thirds". It's pretty simple to do youself, but if you are interested, it is available here:

| its of no use to this thread but the Fujifilm 602Z has a button that displays a 3x3 grid on the screen, very useful for framing shots, but of course most of my shots get cropped anyway...... |

Yup - when you do 'new guide' you can enter a percentage for the location
Just do 4 guides, two vertical at 33% and 66% and two horizontal at 33% and 66%
Record it as an action and you are done. |

The Nikon D70 also offers the grid option... |

Edit, Preferences, Grid
Set to percent at 33.3333
and subdivisions if you want them.
then View Grid |

I find it very useful mainly for getting the horizontals correct ...
