Then, I got hungry for pancakes...would you like bananas or strawberries in yours?...;-)
Edit: Nevermind...I'll make some for everyone...

as photographers, I think we were pretty much there already, as far as the instant gratification goes... |

It might be making him stupid...but I can stay all day on the computer and then curl up with a good book at the end of the day.
LOL.
I love the net....and google..they have brought me a world that otherwise would have been inaccessible.

It is just possible that we have already made ourselves stupid. And I find the "instant gratification" of digital photography a very mixed bag with the endless possibilities of tinkering with the often uninstantaneously gratifying photo. In fact, we are probably in one of the best positions to judge the downfalls of e technology. |

I have to say that the world seems so much more fragmented...I admit I have a harder and harder time doing that...:-/ |

Considering the endless hours I've wasted on tinkering with my most ungratifying photos, I do not think digital photography as instantly gratifying but it does save paper and film! I do think about my children though as they grow up in a world far different than my own in terms of technology and the internet...Hmmm.

the way we read and think as described in the article is going to be a necessity in the very near future. The amount of information that will be readily available is growing exponetially. How will we be able to sort through it all w/o changing how we think or read.
I notice how fast I can find information a picture a video clip etc on the internet versus how fast my father can do it. Its not because he reads slowly or doesn't know where to look, its because he reads too much. I can skim entire pages and find what I need, he can't. That is a learned behavior.
On the flip side, he can sit down and burn through an entire book in a weekend, I take months to finish because I frankly get bored.
I for one think Google has shrunk my world in a good way. I read a lot of world news that I would never have touched if I needed to go out and buy papers and magazines. I feel I am constanly learning new things and about people and places all because I can do it in one place.
Sometimes when I get bored and have downtime at work, I will just pick a subject on Wikipedia and start reading. Ill end up going from hyperlink to hyperlink expanding my knowledge. |

My point, is that there are still people who can and do...do both.
I can read a book in just a few days. A fairly large book, as long as it is good or about something I am interested in. I buy far more books than I do movies or CD's.
I can also use the net and skim very quickly...I think it is just individual for everyone.

Ditto, sort of. At the age of 61, I'm pre-digital by training. I resisted getting into computers, and when I was forced to (for graphic design) I resisted going online. I had some idea that this was going to "change" me somehow, make me "less of an artist" or something.
I was wrong.
I've been immersed in computers and the web since... gawd, I can't even remember anymore. I used CorelDraw 1.0, I used Photoshop 2.0, from their inception, can anyone date me from that? (I'm too lazy today to google up the timelines...)
But since an early age I've been reading an average of 7 books a week, and I am still doing that. DESPITE the fact that I have google and use her like a plow horse...
What does this prove? Nothing, I don't think. So it goes...

When my little daughter was in Kindergarten, they had the students working on a wireless network on laptops in the classroom...Google is a household name already with my 7 year old! If my children are "out of the box" that means the batteries on the X-Box controllers need replacing...
Rescue me...
