Using the Canon software, I converted a couple of pics (in RAW format) that I wanted to consider for the March Free Study. Now, I can't find the RAW files at all. I found the photos, but they now have a TIF extension, and when I looked at the exif info, it doesn't all seem to be there. It shows the date, time, camera, but not much else.
Does the Canon software convert the files to TIF? What happens to the RAW files? Can I use that TIF as my original file if a question should arise, or would I have to have the RAW file that came from the camera?
Looks like I may not be able to enter the MFS after all. Waaaaaaahhh!

have you tried searching for files with a .CRW or .crw extension ?
I've never used the canon software, but I'd be surprised if it deleted the raw files in the process. |

it seems that the CRW extension is correct.
EDIT:
also if your searching with your image editor - it probably wont see the raw files at all.
winXP may only show files of known extensions in the folder view depending on how its set up.

I searched all drives for .crw, and they are definitely not there. My husband thinks he may have deleted them because he was looking at some files that had a big yellow "?" icon, and he thought they were corrupted, so got rid of them! (What a relief that HIS computer is back up and running as of an hour ago - he'll leave mine alone!)
SO - NO RAWS! Would the resulting TIF file be acceptable as an original file, or does this mean I am out of the running for submitting to the MFS?

Dont know about TIF extracts from RAW but jpeg extracts from a RAW file using Canon software retains the exif data

One of the jpegs does have the exif data, but the other one is showing NO exif data at all. Can't figure that out.

Certain editing can strip of EXIF data - depends what you used. E.g., Photoshop save for web loses EXIF but Save As doesn't (makes some sense, reducing file size for web images after all)
Not sure if for example certain ways of rotating JPEGs may lose EXIF and others might preserve it too. |

If it's any consolation to you Linda, I have had the same experience with Canon's software. Images shot in RAW were viewed and then became TIFFs without me realizing what was going on. Minolta's DiMage Viewer that came with my A1 let's you view RAW files without converting them. Haven't used either enough to be really familiar with them but it's on my to do list, along with visiting Canon's site to see if there are any updated versions available.

The Canon File Viewer utility will convert RAW files to TIFFs, but only if you tell it to. You do this from the File menu by selecting File\Save File\Convert and save in file⦠This pops up the Save File dialog box. On the dialog there is a drop-down listbox called âConvert from RAW to Other Formatâ In the listbox you can select either âDo not convertâ, âExif-JPEGâ, âExif-TIFF (8bit/ch)â, or âTIFF (16bit/ch)â If you select the 16bit TIFF option, I believe it strips out the EXIF data. The 8bit TIFF option does not.
Good luck! |

Putting EXIF data in the TIFF files is useful, but it won't work for dpchallenge; if your photo gets a DQ request or is in the top few you will need to submit "your original, unedited, direct-from-camera file" for validation, not a TIFF conversion. If the CRW file is lost, you should probably not submit the photo to a challenge.
None of the conversion tools I've used will touch the original CRW file. But it is good practice to back up them up to a CD or DVD before you do anything else with them, just in case. I personally copy them to a DVD+RW until I get enough photos to burn a DVD+R for a permanent backup.
Have you looked in the Recycle Bin for your deleted RAW files? There are several "undelete" tools available that might be able to recover the files as well. A web search for "undelete" should point you to a ton of them. (I've never tried them, so can't make any recommendations.) |
