I agree with you 110%. Most of us on this site have agreed that we are taking photographs for our own enjoyment, and if we can share a little of that, we have accomplished out goals. I have found that over the last few challenges, I have cared less and less about MY interpretation of the challenge, and tried to see where the photographer was using his/her own vision of the challenge. My voting is alot less complicated than it used to be.

shad·ow n. An area that is not or is only partially irradiated or illuminated because of the interception of radiation by an opaque object between the area and the source of radiation. The rough image cast by an object blocking rays of illumination.

In my opinion, these themes (in this case; Shadow) are NOT stricktly confined to the dictionary's definition of what a shadow is. I think that is up to you to decide. How you feel about shadows. Or even how you see shadows in other objects. I like to have to think a bit and I wouldn't give a photographer a lower vote just because the object portrayed does not reside within the strickt parameters of what a dictionary decides. Metaphors. |

June, 16, 1982:
Dear Journal,
A rep from the local university came to our high school and asked us what we thought we would be doing exactly twenty years from today. I am not sure what I'll be doing, but I sure hope it involves arguing about the differences between shadows and silhouettes with people I've never met.

The fact that people are discussing (I don't think there is any argument here) the difference between shadows and silhouettes only reflects on how much thought they are putting into their photos for the challenge, and how they wish to communicate to their audience. Is that a big deal? |

I think it really reflects how afraid we are that we will be given low scores for being creative and trying to stretch the definition of the boundary.

I think it reflects the amount of reflection we put into a theme about shadows :-)
I wonder how much reflection we will put into a theme about reflections. :-P |

it is not a big deal. but it does seem to indicate motivation to score high by tailoring one''s submission to the ''slings and arrows'' rather than doing what one feels is required or desired by one''s internal value system : ). .

So when I was initially reading this thread, I thought "hey, sure a silhouette is a shadow." But after taking some pictures today, I decided to play it safe and submit a real "shadow." I got a cool silhouette I wanted to share, though.
Silhouette
What do you guys think, would it have gotten panned for not being a shadow?

*I* think a silhouette counts as a shadow and I hope to see some nice ones this week...

If the shadow effect/shadowy area/shadow/siluohette completes the image then that is a great challenge.
I mean...aren't these challenges about taking great pictures? The specifics about the challenge should not get to the point where it becomes a freaking checkmark like grading 3rd grade math problems.
Shadows can be subtle like the changes in a facial contour or the variations of a storm cloud. They can be bold like lines of a fence cutting across a white sidewalk/white sand. They can be the sole star of the show like a silouhette or a partner to a live subject. They can be mingled, fading, creeping, feathery, colored like a rainbow or pitch black.
But..when you guys look at these photos for the next week..could you ask yourself this one question. Without the shadowy effect what would this photo be like. If the dark stuff gives you the elements of a great photo in whatever capacity why nit pick, just go with it and enjoy the differences :-) |
