my brother has a stack of slides which he'd like to put on hard drive or cd ..
does anyone have any idea how we'd go about this .. ??

There's really 2 options. You can buy a scanner and feed it slides all day, or you can have someone do it for you. Depending on the quality you want, having someone else do it can be cheap or expensive. For old family snaps, we used Costco (don't know if you have Costco there). The quality of the scans was fine, and they turned the job (about 1500 slides) around in about a week. I can't remember how much it cost, but I think they did the whole job for <$100 USD. It certainly wasn't expensive.

After that, we picked the best 100 or so and fixed the color. It's amazing how much the color shifts on 40 year old slides.

I just called Costco -- they will scan 40 pre-processed 35mm negatives to an archival gold CD for $2.99. The scanned photos are approximately 3000 x 2000 pixel JPEGs, or about what you'd get from a 6MP camera. It's a great deal.

Scans of mounted slides are $0.29 each. Still a great deal.

Thanks for posting this! I just received a bunch of slides that my Grandmother made years ago and my sibs want copies.
