Well I finally put my studio lighting, camera, and myself to the test with my first photo shoot. I have more to edit but here are five of them. I would like to here your comments and/or critiques before I show them to the family. The shoot was free of charge in exchange for experience. They asked me if I could take a few pictures for them. Take a look and let me know what you think. I really need your feedback; as I stated this is my first every shoot with a model.

Very little editing done. Mostly USM and resize. Only photo -04 is cropped.

Nicely done! The model looks quite comfortable with you! He's precious! The lighting is perfect IMHO. Great job! ;)

Thanks magenmarie and mpeters for your post. Thanks gwe21, dassilem, suemack, and mpeters for your comments. I was hoping in 6 hours to have a few more critiques especially from some of the sites photographers that are well known for their portraiture work since a few of them were online during the time I opened up this thread and during the course of the 6 hours. Two post in six hours, wow!

It’s not easy putting yourself on the chopping block asking for critiques or comments when you know this was your first attempt at shooting a model. Not many responding leads me to believe their silence is a way of saying – no go! I’ll take down the photographs and determine at a later date if it’s worth pursuing further investments in photography accessories. No need to fool myself into thinking I may have been good at this.
I guess I̢۪m just a little disappointed.

OMG a "take my toys and go" attitude? Scott, I saw your pics last night - I was working and didn't have time to leave a critique, but planned to this morning. But seriously, it seems like 400 people a day post images here for critique, you can't expect people to jump right on every request immediately.

I will say this much... your images looked "saleable" to me - no major flaws, no problems with lighting etc.

First let me say I'm sorry for being so quick to get disappointed. No excuses but yesterday was a very stressful day for me.

I knew the pictures need help but didn't know in what ways and I know I let my frustration get the best of me. I should not of let it pour over into the forums because I know a lot of you a very busy and do your best in providing C/C; better than me.

So to all that I may have offended, please accept my apology and I will try to take other peoples obligations into consideration before coming to conclusions.

Everyone here has been very helpful to me in the past and and present and I value your input a great deal.

Again sorry everyone I should not of taken my bad day out on you. NO EXCUSES!

Scott

Note: I have taken the advice I received from the comments and have been re-working some editing and I'll post when finished. If all of you don't hate me for my childish behavior yesterday, I would like your input when I post them (when you get time to look them over).
Thanks.

Of course we don't hate you, Scott. Don't be silly, we all have off days. I'd love to have another look once you repost your pics. :)

Thanks - heres the link to the collection in my portfolio. There are eight photos so it was easier to link to the portfolio than posting them all here.
Thanks,
Scott

K - so my first question is "what lens did you use"? I ask because most of these feel too close; important things are cropped out like hands, feet, etc. I understand the challenges of shooting little ones, but something that works well for me is to make really loud and totally silly-sounding noises to get baby to look at the camera. I also play peek-a-boo from behind the camera which makes babies giggle. While your technicals look good, I think some attention to posing & composition will improve your portraits noticeably. Start looking at portraits you like and ask yourself "what is it about this portrait that I like"... then shoot every human you come across!! :D

I love these pictures - so much personality captured. Next time you post pictures for us to enjoy, remember that when it is noon in Georgia, the aussies are asleep, most of the US is at work, I'm not sure what Europe is doing or the rest of the members. THese pictures are really really good and we like to look even if we don't comment right away.

Good point. I have NO excuse for my behavior yesterday and thank you for your comment and understanding.

Thank you Cindi, very valuable advice.

ETA: The lens used was my Canon 50mm f/1.8. I need to get a good portrait lens one day. :)

I re-named your thread (from "Fist" to "First")so it would seem less threatening. :-)
