I'm in with my least faveorite of the 3 choices I had, that way the voting won't bother me, it's good for about a 4.8 if it does better I'll be happy.

So might I suggest, now that I can see the entries, that "High Contrast" really meant "Extra Free Study! Go Nuts!"?

Well that would be in high contrast to what the photographers thought. :)

I took one at about 10:30 last night and posted it up for the hell of it after some one convinced me to. I've already had some one "accuse" it of being artwork (as in photoshopped across the board I assume.) in the comments...they just can't tell what a backlight is I assume...

I knew I should have just took a picture of black piece of paper and a white piece of paper laying together. That's contrasty, right?

If you photograph a piece of artwork, a painting, a drawing, etc., by itself then you'll likely get DQ'd... that's against the rules.

yes black and white are contrasty, but shooting 2 pieces of paper all by themselves would likely score a 3 unless you're really creative with them. lol

That would be extreme contrast (assuming correct exposure), but even harsh sunlight would be an example of high contrast IMO. All black and all white aren't necessary.

What if it's your own artwork?

That would still be a DQ... UNLESS it's obviously artwork. Those are left to the voters.

??????

So Artwork is DQ unless it's clearly artwork? huh?

Huh? That's confusing!

The photo you posted would be fine the way I understand it because it has a 3D element (the pen) with the "artwork". Now if it was just a straight-on shot of the "artwork" alone that may be a problem. I think. :-)

That was the old artwork rule. The current rule is this: "You may... include existing images or artwork as part of your composition as long as the entry does not appear to consist entirely of a pre-existing photograph in order to circumvent date or editing rules or fool the voters into thinking you actually captured the original photograph." A straight shot of a dollar bill or the Mona Lisa would be legal under the current rule since it doesn't circumvent editing rules or fool anyone. If the bulk of your entry was a photo of a photo or monitor that appeared to be a "live scene," then that would be a DQ (even if you included some small 3D element). The object is not to stifle creativity or limit subject matter, but to keep people from submitting a pre-existing photo that looks like a "live" shot.

Anyway, this is off topic. Let's get back to high contrast...

So, is it high contrast or high-key (as described in the photographer's ( gwe21) own comments)? Or both? Would it be presumptuous to consider all high-key as also high contrast? Some high-key is a bit flatter (less contrasty) isn't it?

To me this photograph is not high contrast
i would need to see a clear difference between blacks and whites and less grays, it just looks like another b/w photo to me with pronounced blacks, thats all

Edit

This is what i consider high contrast

I would give this image a 7/8
as opposed to a 5 on the original

Nah...I'd consider that blownout high-key. :-)

I should have done that, but I was explaining to someone else, that I found High Contrast to be very confusing as there where so many different explainations. But I treat each challenge as a school lesson in what, how, where and whatnot on how to do it.

So far I have learnt, well, not a lot, even scoring was hard for me. I think I like Low Light a little better!

I noticed that too. I didn't say anything though because I thought someone else is bound to...

I was thinking of taking a new photo of this horse to submit for the high contrast..but since it was raining..I opted to sit it out and just play around with the old one. Would it have been a good choice to submit...IF it were a current photo?
