Spent £14 on an oly 50mm 1.8 and a pair of skylight filters, glued them together and turned my A1 into a virtual microscope. Second shot produced the below and whilst it isn't very interesting I thought I'd load it into my portfolio as a benchmark shot. Probably 1.5-2cm away, some vignetting but getting so close allows big cropping (this is 25% of the image).

I reckon it will take a while to get used to hand held shake as my little manfrotto isn't that versatile and the A1's anti shake doesnt want to kick in at faster shutter speeds. DOF must be at least 3mm

Gonna be great fun in the bug world :)

How fun. PLEASE
Take a picture of what you made for us.

Very cool ... using two sky filters instead of a macro coupler.

might decrease quality just a bit, due to more glass.

No comments on the pic justine, not the best quality but hope you get the idea.

hsteg, yes it may be a problem, will wait and see. This is a trial and the shop did not have any 49 to 49 coupling rings (I even thought of removing the glass). Great fun all the same, I'm seeing things differently already :)

doh! edited as I forgot the pic

More macro stupidity ;)

These are both full frame, 6Mp images resized. No cropping.

Nickel with 100mm macro, on D60 (160mm equivalent)

Same coin, same camera
1.4x teleconverter, 25mm extension tube, 100mm macro, reversed 50mm

Looks something like

And one more shot - this time of a dime and with me understanding what I'm doing a bit more.

Again, full frame, no cropping:

Gordon, I see you made a small edit, I thought the dimes looked a lot like nickels in Texas!

I still don't understand the money :) That's why I went back and shot an actual dime for the second one :)

The dimes *are* the size of nickels in Texas... everything's bigger in Texas!

@Gordon: My math tells me your magnification was 5x! You've equalled capability of the MP-E65!

Thanks for showing this. Just amazing. You BOYS and your toys. I'm always impressed at how clever people can be to think of such things.
Now the macros: You, Gordon, Jacko and several others just need the Spring and the bugs to come out!!! LOL They really are fun to look at.
Thanks again.

Thanks for working it out for me :) Quality is pretty good really, though control is somewhat lacking (!) Most of the pieces are also really for other purposes, but it was fun getting it working.

I'm awaiting my macro coupling ring from B+H, should be here tomorrow. Last piece I need for a similar setup. Well, except the focusing rails!

I've named it Bacillus mandarinii

The rail really helped - you have about quarter an inch of potential focal region to work with otherwise - being able to move the camera on the rails was semi-essential to not pulling all my hair out.
