I would like to know how much can one crop or alter a photo?
I have read the rules but they are not that clear.
for instance, can I blank out parts of the pic whilst cropping?
can I darken or lighten a pic with photoshop?
thanks |

In basic editing, you can apply the allowed edits to the entire image. So, for instance, you can increase/decrease levels, brightness/contrast, curves. You can apply sharpen or unsharp mask, you can crop your original to achieve your composition, etc.
Refer to the rules list of allowable edits. |

You can also just crop out the final 640x480 pixels without resizing. You have to edit everything the same across the board, but you could just throw away 95% of your picture and enter what was left, assuming you use one of the newer SLR cameras.
Its a good way to get tight macro shots.

Only if there is some other element in the photo, not just the TV screen.

T.V photos come out real bad normally, because of the lo resoloution. Sometimes an image on a computer can be used as a background though. |

TV photos frequently suffer from a "flicker" or rolling effect because the camera captures the screen in mid-refresh, especially if your exposure is around 1/30th second or slower. |

A photo from a magazine could be a component of your overall set-up, but it must be in an original context. Otherwise you are just stealing/copying someone else's work. For example, even had this been a real tabloid, it still would have been OK:
