To all of those fine men and women who serve or served in the United States Armed Forces: Thank you for your service to our great country.

This is the first Memorial Day for me without my father-in-law. He was a good man, and a true war hero. He flew P-51s, bomber escort over Germany, and was shot down and wounded three times.

He kept climbing back into the cockpit and going back up though. He wasn't about to let his fellow fliers go without support. He lost many friends, and he never talked about his experiences except under the most introspective times. I found more out about him through records and friends than from him.

He went on to train pilots in the Korean war. He was a good friend and an interesting and fun guy.

I will miss him and I am thankful I had the pleasure of his company as a friend and family.

Best wishes to all who have had friends and family in armed conflict anywhere, and condolences to those who have lost them.

If only we'd learn that nobody wins at war......

Jeb, thanks for sharing the story of your father-in-law. It's interesting, and sad in a way, that so many of his generation were either too humble, didn't consider it apropriate, or simply didn't want to go around sharing their stories from being in the service. I'm very thankful that Ken Burns focused his exceptional talent on getting some of their stories out in his PBS series The War

Happy Memorial Day to all and thanks to all of you vets & current service people who have put yourselves on the line. I hope Washington finds a way to treat you fairly with its pending legislation.

I know "thank you" doesn't say nearly enough, but it's all I can offer to those who have served...so here is my heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you and to those who have lost loved ones who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Don't know if you've seen this story but it's just amazing. //www.militarytimes.com/hancock
