Well, I reckon that comes under the same banner as commenting during voting...i.e. revealing peoples identities, therefore giving them an unfair advantage in the voting...does this mean we will now be having requests to ban portrait and especially self portrait challenges from now on ??

Since this is relevant to this thread. Gawd I miss Dr Jones' entries. I always gave him a 10, except the time he showed his own ass. I gave him a 9 because he didn't shoot his model.

Definitely worried now...recognising faces is one thing but this is taking it to a new level.

The funny thing is his 'stuff magazine or playboy' shot - the model ended up on the cover of playboy a few months later...
He hasn't seemed to be around much recently. |

Though I have officially been here longer than you there was only one portrait I recognized and that was because of the image and not because I recognized the person in the image.
I vote on a regular basis and always vote on all images in a challenge but rarely ever know who or guess who the photographer is. I never cease to be amazed, but I am never surprised about images from certain folks.

The people that I've selected as favorites I've studied and examine their photos and sometimes you can recognize there style. |

faidoi,
When voting I never think about who the photographer might be. When looking at the images it just never occurs to me. But later after the challenge is done I find myself saying, "I'm not surprised that so-and-s0 took that shot".

I can confidently predict that I know ALL the photgraphers in the concluded challenges. THAT is how good I really am!

He has appeared on the who's online link a couple of times after the portrait challenge ended. He's here now. |

Why do you assume it gives advantage, as opposed to giving disadvantage?
Maybe what is needed is a guideline, or suggestion, in the rules saying the photographers should avoid entries that are easily indentified as theirs. I'd guess most of us do this without thinking about it very much out of a general respect for the concept of anonymity.
I usually don't think about who the photographer is when voting but sometimes an entry speaks out loudly forcing me to say that looks like .. so and so. This is mostly based on subject matter rather than style. But others do think about it and that is certainly as valid as my approach. In fact, I find that approach intrigueing enough that maybe I'll put a little more resources into it. There is probably a lot to be gained from studying the style of those you admire. But that's a far cry from seeing an entry and saying to yourself "JoePhotog needs to get out more, I've seen his puppy in the last three challenges." A self-portrait challenge is about the only topic I can think of where identifyable content is necessary. |

Check out my comments on this shot...I knew it was Pitsaman right away! But since he's changed to team rebel, I can't recognize his stuff anymore.

I suppose it depends what you think of the person..but isn`t that just the same when PM`ing ?
Harvey, I don`t think it has much advantage or disadvantage to it just as I think PM`ing during voting has a minimal impact and was merely using this issue to emphasise the similarity...why do we worry about anonimity of comments when there are other similar issues to which we never give a second thought ?
Oh..and I admit to being a wee bit tongue in cheek about banning portraits etc.

If this debate is reduced to degrees I'll take the absolutist position on it and say why should we tolerate any advantage or disadvantage? Why allow any opportunity to influence the vote, either positively or negatively? Especially when there is so little to be gained by doing so. |

My honest opinion, and the point I`ve been trying to put across is that there is not a lot to debate about, in my opinion,in degrees or otherwise.
Put simply..I don`t think that the influence that PM`ing during a challenge or recognising self portrait shots have on the voting are anything that I would worry about as having a major impact on the outcome of challenges.
However, should the system change to remove these "problems"..I wouldn`t lose any sleep.
Gordon
