that my pb photo only has a 5.4(im expecting to have some better photos eventually:) and was the 38% thingy in its challenge. is that kinda normal, or am i just lame? :/

I personally think that a 5.0 is the average on a scale of 1 to 10.
So, anything over a 5.0 is better than average and anything under is below average. That's how I look at it when I vote, and when I receive my scores.

It just depends on the other entries, as well as the number of them. Sometimes you'll get more great shots than usual, sometimes it goes in your favour.
I've had a 5.61 at just 38% and a 5.39 at a high 70%.
eta; Your scores look like they follow about the same pattern :)

| It does depend on the other entries and how they fare. My recent macro entry scored just a hair shy of my PB, but it came in at #19 in the challenge, while my PB made honorable mention at #5. |

You've got 15 challenges under your belt so you are just starting out here. Some start at the top, other start a little lower. You're really starting in the middle so that's not a bad start.

5.5 would be the average.
So a 5 would be bellow average, and 6 above. At least thats how I vote. |

I'd say that a 5.4 being 38th percentile is unusual, but not rare. As others have said, where a given score falls in the percentile just depends on the entries.
One of my shots scored 5.66 but was only 29th percentile. That's because there were a whole lot of really terrific entries. I've had a few in the 5.3-5.5 range around the 40th percentile, similar to what you had, but I'd say that's below the usual percentile for that score.
On the flip side, I've had a 6.03 shot hit 94th percentile while a 6.57 shot was 72nd percentile.
